Architect Task
Step 1
Get with your group members and decide how the organelles you researched
would fit into an actual city.
Example: The mitochondria could represent a power plant because it
provides the cell with its needed energy.
AS THE ARCHITECT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE THE FINAL
CHOICES AS TO HOW THE CELL ORGANELLES WILL BE REPRESENTED
IN THE CITY. YOU WILL BE EVALUATED BASED ON THESE DECISIONS.
Have the REPORTER record all the information for this step and steps 2 and 3.
Step 2
You will continue with step 1 until the following organelles have been used:
chloroplasts, leucoplasts, chromoplasts, cytoskeleton, cell wall, vacuole,
endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, lysosomes, golgi apparatus, plasma
membrane, nucleus, ribosomes. We are not going to use the centrioles, as the
factory will represent a plant cell instead of an animal cell.
Step 3
Together, give your factory a name. You will also name the parts of your factory
that correspond to actual cell structures.
Example: The mitochondria could be named "The Mighty Power Plant."
THIS PART OF THE PROCESS, AGAIN, IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
The REPORTER will also record this information.
Step 4
As the architect, it is your responsibility to decide the best placements for your
cell structures based on your research of the cell and its organelles.
For example:The nucleus tends to be found near the center of the cell, so
you would want to make sure that your factory's "nucleus" is near the
center of the building.
ALSO, SOME OF THE CELL STRUCTURES CAN REPRESENT PEOPLE AND
NOT JUST MACHINES OR PARTS OF THE FACTORY.
For Example: The cytoskeleton, which gives the cell support, could be
represented by a group of counselors that give support to help individuals lead
productive lives.
It is also your responsibility to begin drawing a rough draft of the factory.
Step 5
Once you have decided on placements of structures in the factory, you will begin
the final drawing of the city. If you are using small and large machines, make sure
you show the different sizes. If people are an important part of your city, sketch
them in as well. (Stick figures are fine)
SKETCH EVERYTHING INCLUDING EXTRAS SUCH AS PEOPLE, CARTS,
TRUCKS, ETC...
It is this that the factory builders will use to put together the city. You can find the
requirements below.
