Objective: In the study of plant and animal cells, students will make comparisons to show relationships and associations between cell organelle functions and a roadside attraction or “city”. Students will develop a unique travel brochure demonstrating the ability to accurately describe and explain the function of cell organelles. CA SCIENCE STANDARDS Cell Biology 1. The fundamental life processes of plants and animals depend on a variety of chemical reactions that occur in specialized areas of the organism's cells. As a basis for understanding this concept: a. Students know cells are enclosed within semi permeable membranes that regulate their interaction with their surroundings. b. Students know how prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells (including those from plants and animals), and viruses differ in complexity and general structure. c. Students know the role of the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus in the secretion of proteins. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What is the structure of the cell and function of the cell organelles? How can you relate the cell organelles’ structure and function to a roadside attraction or “city”? Part 1: Brainstorming Students are required to produce a travel brochure that describes a plant or animal cell as if it were a large exhibit, amusement park, or roadside attraction. Students must describe the function of the organelles accurately and compare it to a part of the attraction. For example, the mitochondria are represented as the actual power supply of the attraction (a generator or electrical breaker). The travel brochure should entice visitors to take the next exit and visit the “incredible, amazing, and unbelievable sights of an animal or plant cell.” For example, visitors might want to “visit the “name for ribosomes”, located just outside the “nucleus”, and watch as “proteins” are synthesized before your very eyes!” Required organellesAnimal cell- cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, vacuole, golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), ribosomes, lysosomes Plant cell- cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria, vacuole, golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum (ER), ribosomes, lysosomes, cell wall, and choloroplasts Students will use organizer to assign each organelle to a location in the attraction and write an enticing description for each part. Part 2: Creation of Brochure Students will use Microsoft Word tri-fold template to design a cell brochure. You can hand write it if you do not have access to a computer. Students will use clip art, pictures, or draw pictures to illustrate their brochure. Students will develop a unique travel brochure demonstrating the ability to accurately describe and explain the function of cell organelles.
