Q2.
Bk Ch2 S2.5 FQ2
Study the following graph, showing the different phases of the cell cycle.

Mitosis is the phase of the cell cycle during which chromosomes are most obviously active. Use
the graph to estimate the percentage of time of a cell cycle that mitosis takes up.
What does the graph tell you about the amount of chromosomal material in a cell at different
stages in the cell cycle?
Describe the activities that occur during each of the different phases.

0.8  5.9  100 = 14%
During G1 the amount of chromosomal material remains stable. During the S stage the amount of
chromosomal material is increasing until it is doubled by the end of this stage. It is stable once
again during the G2 stage. During the M stage the amount of chromosomal material in the cell
decreases.
G1: growth; S: DNA synthesis; G2: growth; M: mitosis (nuclear division).
Q3.
Bk Ch2 S2.5 FQ3
Most of your body cells have 46 chromosomes. If all of these body cells contain the same genetic
information, coding for the same instructions, explain how it is that cells in different tissues of the body
are different from one another.

Bk Ch2 S2.5 FA3
Cell differentiation accounts for the differences between cells in various tissues. In the early stages of
cell differentiation genes controlling the production of different proteins and functions are switched on
while others are inactive or switched off. Although the same genetic information is present in all cells
not all of the information is expressed in every cell.
