Cell Cycle
Cell Cycle—the sequence of growth and division of a cell. It is
a cycle b/c it repeats itself over and over.
Stages of the cell cycle
Mitosis
G2 Phase
S Phase
G1 Phase
Interphase—longest period of cell cycle. Includes 3 parts:
G1— Rapid protein synthesis and cell growth.
Longest and most variable part of the cell cycle.
Chromosomes are not visible in the nucleus.
S stage— chromosomes are replicated in the
nucleus. Chromosomes shorten and coil,
become visible.
G2— proteins needed for cell division (mitosis)
are synthesized. Cell organizes for mitosis.
Chromosomes continue to coil, are very visible.
Mitosis (M phase)—actual division process of the cell.
Shortest stage of the cycle.
End result: two identical daughter cells formed.
