ELPS (Language
Objective)
Tuesday-
Wednesday-
Thursday-
Friday-
BIOL.2E Plan and implement descriptive, comparative, and experimental investigations, including asking questions, formulating
testable hypotheses, and selecting equipment and technology.
BIOL.2F Collect and organize qualitative and quantitative data, and make measurements with accuracy and precision.
BIOL.2G Analyze, evaluate, make inferences, and predict trends from data.
Pre-Planning: Unpacking the Standards
Ⓡ BIOL.4C Compare the structure of viruses to cells, describe viral reproduction, and describe the role of viruses in causing
diseases, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and influenza.
ELPS C.1.e Internalize new basic and academic language by using and reusing it in meaningful ways in speaking and
writing activities that build concept and language attainment.
ELPS C.4.d Use prereading supports such as graphic organizers, illustrations, and pretaught topic-related vocabulary and
other prereading activities to enhance comprehension of written text.
ELPS C.5.f Write using a variety of grade-appropriate sentence lengths, patterns, and connecting words to combine
phrases, clauses, and sentences in increasingly accurate ways as more English is acquired.

Vocabulary
(Academic and
Content)
Compare, describe
Infection - a disease caused by germs that enter the body
Protein – biomolecule that contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen; needed by the body for growth and repair
Pathogen – disease causing agent
Capsid – protein coat surrounding a virus

Influenza - a very contagious virus disease with fever, exhaustion, severe aches and pains, and inflammation of the respiratory
tract
Sheath - covering
Bacteria – domain of unicellular prokaryotes that have cell walls containing peptidoglycan; corresponds to the kingdom Eubacteria
Antibiotic – group of drugs used to block the growth and reproduction of bacterial pathogens
Lytic infection – type of infection in which a virus enters a cell, makes copies of itself, and causes the cell to burst
Lysogenic infection – type of infection in which a virus embeds its DNA into the DNA of the host cell and is replicated along with
the host cell’s DNA
Retrovirus – RNA virus that contains RNA as its genetic information
Vaccine – preparation of weakened or killed pathogens used to produce immunity to a disease
Receptor – on or in a cell, a specific protein to whose shape fits that of a specific molecular messenger, such as a hormone
Bacteriophage – kind of virus that infects bacteria
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) - any of a group of viruses that infect and destroy helper T cells causing the marked
reduction in their numbers that is diagnostic of AIDS

Lesson Topic
(Content Objective)
Engage:
WarmUp/Opening (min)
1. What is the structure and function of a virus and how is it similar and different to cells?
2. How do viruses replicate and cause disease?
3. Why are antibiotics not effective against viruses?



Watch the video “Flu Attack! How a Virus Invades Your Body.”
How is the flu virus spread?
What are the symptoms of the flu?
What are the treatments for the flu virus?

Compare and contrast the lytic and lysogenic cycles of viruses, explaining the different effects on the host and the timeline for each
life cycle.

Homework
*All lesson plans are subject to revisions and addendums by teacher.
*This lesson plan is designed to be a guide the teacher can use to engage in thoughtful planning of each lesson, to better integrate vertical
alignment opportunities, and to ensure high order thinking opportunities throughout instructional timeframes.
