PHYSIOLOGY FOR THE EXERCISE AND SPORT SCIENCES Page 1 The Cardiovascular System: Part 1 Type the question and your answer, in complete sentences, on a separate sheet of paper. Turn in your answers to the Lab Instructor. 1) Describe the structures of the heart that are responsible for regulating the movement of blood from one chamber to the next. 2) The pathway by which action potentials from the sinoatrial node travel through the heart is important for the normal function of the heart. Describe the conduction pathway of the heart and the consequences of that arrangement. 3) Contraction of the ventricular myocardial cells originates from the Purkinje cells. Describe the electrical events responsible for the action potential of the ventricle. 4) Describe the changes in pressure and volume that occur within the left ventricle throughout the course of the cardiac cycle, starting at the beginning of diastole. 5) Pressure within the aorta varies throughout the contractile cycle of the heart. Describe the changes in pressure that are observed in the aorta and the source of those changes. 6) Cardiac output is in part determined by changes in heart rate. Describe the factors that are responsible for inducing changes in heart rate. 7) Cardiac output is in part determined by changes in stroke volume. Identify the factors involved in the control of stroke volume. MICHELLE A CLEARY PhD, ATC
