BRIEF INTRODUCTION
In view of great advances in electro-optical technologies in the past decade,
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) established Institute of Electro-Optical
(E-O) Science and Engineering (EOSE) (Master programs) in 2002. PhD program
is scheduled to start in 2004. EOSE has identified the following areas for future
development: flat panel displays, optic communication, photonic devices, and
bio-medical electro-optics. EOSE integrates E-O resources, manpower within
NCKU to provide services to electro-optical industries in Taiwan, especially in
Tainan Science-based Industrial Park.。

TEACHING OBJECTIVES
The goal of the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering is to provide rigid
training for the future academic scholars as well as the high-level R&D research
scientists/engineers. Students are encouraged to develop creativity of original
thinking and the ability of conducting independent research.

AMBITION
Electro-optics is an inter-disciplinary technology. It combines mechanics,
electronics, chemistry, material, automatic control and physics. Electro-optical is
a technology-intense, high added value, low pollution industry. It finds many
applications in military, consumer and hi-tech areas, and hence its importance has
drawn a global attention. As a result, E-O technology has been identified as one
of the key industries by every country world-wide. Enormous manpower, capital
investments have been brought in this technology over the past decade. In return,
the annual global market growth of E-O products is ~20% during this period of
time. In Taiwan, flat panel displays (FPDs) industry has grown very rapidly
recently. EOSE will make her best effort to promote the success of FPDs industry.

Areas of Research and development
1. Electro-Optical materials and elements: semiconductor photonic materials,
IR materials, optical coatings, organic macromolecule materials,
electro-optical elements, MEMS materials and devices, nonlinear optical
materials and applications, VLSI engineering, optical detectors.
2. Optical Information: optical signal processing, image processing, nonlinear
optics, Fourier optics, phase conjugation, fiber communication,
semiconductor optics, digital display engineering, optical storage, optical
system design.
3. Frontiers of Electro-optical Science: atomics and molecules manipulation,
High field spectroscopy, MEMS system development, outer space optics
payload project development, non-destructive scanning, quantum optics,
spin-electron technology, nanometer E-O materials.
4. Biomedical Electro-Optics
