ENZYME ACTIVITY AND REGULATION
Directions: You are going to view a series of on-line animations to help you
better understand enzymes. Log onto http://www.4teachers.org/ and click
onto Track Star icon along the right margin. View Track # 240347. The
password is “ferg”. You should view the track in text. Visit each of the
sites; then complete the questions that follow.
Questions:
I.
Describe activation energy. Discuss the effect an enzyme has on
activation energy in a chemical reaction.
II.
Compare the lock and key model with the induced fit model.
III.
Describe the effects of the following on enzyme activity:
a. pH
b. temperature
c. salt concentration
d. concentration of enzyme or substrate
e. cofactors
IV.
What is a metabolic pathway? How does it work? Describe
feedback inhibition.
V.
What is an allosteric enzyme? Describe its structure. How does it
regulate enzyme activity?
VI.
Describe the difference between :
a. Competitive and non-competitive inhibition
b. Reversible and irreversible inhibition
c. How can drugs be utilized as enzyme inhibitors? Give an
example.
VII.
Do the virtual lab and answer the questions in the journal. Print
this page and turn in with your answers to the above.
