UNIT ASSESSMENT PLAN
Name of Unit: UNIT 6: Imperialism and Progressivism Taylor Burgess- 11th Grade American History
This is to be a 10 day teaching unit plan with your assessment on the 11th day.
DAY 1
Topic: Becoming a World Power
A. The Imperialist Vision
Student friendly learning targets: The students will recall the ways in which the United States lived out the
policy of imperialism.
ACOS correlation: 3.) Explain the impact of American imperialism, including the geographic changes due to
the Open Door Policy and the Roosevelt Corollary, on the foreign policy of the United States between
Reconstruction and World War I.
Today’s lesson focuses primarily on imperialism, and how the United States carried this process out.
This is the introductory lesson to the unit. I will present a powerpoint presentation on section 1. I will then give
the students the little remaining time in class to get started on their Section 1 questions.
DAY 2
Topic: Becoming a World Power
B. The Spanish-American War
C. New American Diplomacy
Student friendly learning targets: The students will analyze the Open Door policy, the public reaction, and its
effect on foreign relations.
ACOS correlation: 3.) Explain the impact of American imperialism, including the geographic changes due to
the Open Door Policy and the Roosevelt Corollary, on the foreign policy of the United States between
Reconstruction and World War I.
I will begin the class by reviewing the section questions that were given for homework the night before.
I will then show an introductory video from the textbook DVD. I will then present a powerpoint on sections 2 &
3, and assign the questions for homework.
DAY 3
Topic: The Progressive Movement
A. The Roots of Progressivism
Student friendly learning targets: The students will interpret the impact of the iniative, referendum, and recall
reforms; along with the & the 17th Amendment on the Progressive Movement.
ACOS correlation: 3.) Explain the impact of American imperialism, including the geographic changes due to
the Open Door Policy and the Roosevelt Corollary, on the foreign policy of the United States between
Reconstruction and World War I.
The class will watch a short introductory video from the textbook DVD. A powerpoint presentation will
be given to the class on the material covered in section 1. The students will then complete a vocabulary
assignment covering the key terms throughout section 1.
DAY 4
Topic: The Progressive Movement
B. Roosevelt in Office
Student friendly learning targets: The students will analyze the presidency of Teddy Roosevelt, the
disappointment of the Taft administration, and the election of 1912.
ACOS correlation: 3.) Explain the impact of American imperialism, including the geographic changes due to
the Open Door Policy and the Roosevelt Corollary, on the foreign policy of the United States between
Reconstruction and World War I.
The class will watch a short introductory video from the textbook DVD. A powerpoint presentation will
be given to the class on the material covered in section 2. The students will then complete a graphic organizer
activity concerning the election of 1912.
DAY 5
Topic: The Progressive Movement
C. The Taft Administration
D. The Wilson Years
Student friendly learning targets: The students will appraise the key events of the Progressive movement, the
most influential people of this movement, and the election of 1912.
ACOS correlation: 3.) Explain the impact of American imperialism, including the geographic changes due to
the Open Door Policy and the Roosevelt Corollary, on the foreign policy of the United States between
Reconstruction and World War I.
Today’s lesson is a quick overview of William Howard and Woodrow Wilson’s time in office, and their
role in the Progressive Movement. The class will be split up into small groups. Each group will be assigned text
from sections 3 and 4 to read together. Each group’s elected speaker will then discuss the important parts of the
text they just read out-loud to the class. I will ask questions after each group talks in order to promote class
discussion.
DAY 6
Topic: World War I & Its Aftermath
A. The United States Enters WWI.
Student friendly learning targets: The students will interpret the causes and effects of American intervention in
Mexico and the Carribean.
ACOS correlation: 4.) Describe the causes and impact of the intervention by the United States in WWI.
The class will watch a short introductory video from the textbook DVD. A powerpoint presentation will
be given to the class on the material covered in section 1. The students will then complete a graphic organizer
activity concerning the causes and effects of American intervention in Mexico and the Carribean.
DAY 7
Topic: World War I & Its Aftermath
A. The United States Enters WWI.
Student friendly learning targets: The students will analyze the events leading to WWI and why the U.S.
entered the war.
ACOS correlation: 4.) Describe the causes and impact of the intervention by the United States in World War I.
I will go over the section questions with the class that were assigned for homework the day before. A
powerpoint presentation will be given to the class on the material covered in the 2nd part of section 1. The
students will then complete a vocabulary assignment covering the key terms in section 1.
DAY 8
Topic: World War I & Its Aftermath
B. The Home Front
Student friendly learning targets: The students will apply the ways in which the economy was controlled in
order to support the war, and how the U.S. gained that support.
ACOS correlation: 4.) Describe the causes and impact of the intervention by the United States in World War I.
I will quickly go over the section questions assigned the day before for homework. I will then pass out the study
guide for the test. Next, the class will be split up into small groups. Each group will be assigned text from
section 2 to read together. Each group’s elected speaker will then discuss the important parts of the text they just
read out-loud to the class. I will ask questions after each group talks in order to promote class discussion.
DAY 9
Topic: World War I & Its Aftermath
C. A Bloody Conflict
Student friendly learning targets: The students will evaluate the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, the result
of these conditions in Europe, and the American response.
ACOS correlation: 4.) Describe the causes and impact of the intervention by the United States in World War I.
The class will watch a short introductory video from the textbook DVD. A powerpoint presentation will
be given to the class on the material covered in section 3. The students will then complete a graphic organizer
activity concerning the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, and how these conditions affected Europe.
DAY 10
Topic: World War I & Its Aftermath
D. The War’s Impact
Student friendly learning targets: The students will examine the impact of WWI on American society, and how
this led to the Red Scare.
ACOS correlation: 4.) Describe the causes and impact of the intervention by the United States in World War I.
A powerpoint presentation will be given on section 4 to the class. I will then go over the study guide in
class. I will also go over the format of the test. If there is enough time left, we will play a review game.
DAY 11
Assessment of unit- The students will be given a test on Unit 6, which includes materials covered in Chapters
17-19.
