Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe
beneficial and pathogenic interactions between microorganisms
and plants; and control of infectious diseases of plants.
Classification
Science > Microbiology
Available grade
Achieved
Explanatory notes
None.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Describe beneficial interactions between microorganisms and plants.
Evidence requirements
1.1
The infection process is described in terms of the physical change to the
microorganism and/or plant from the interaction.
Range
1.2
may include but is not limited to – nodule formation, mycorrhizal,
epiphytic, rhizosphere associations.
The beneficial effects are described for the microorganism and/or plant in terms
of the interaction.
Outcome 2
Describe pathogenic interactions between microorganisms and plants.
Range
pathogenic interactions include – bacterial-plant, fungal-plant, viral-plant.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Infectious plant diseases are described in terms of their pathogenesis.
2.2
The manner in which the pathogen in each interaction gains entry is described
in terms of damage to plants.

Plant mechanisms are described in relation to their defence against pathogens.
Outcome 3
Describe control of infectious diseases of plants.
Range
infectious diseases include – bacterial, fungal, viral.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Methods of infectious disease control are described in terms of the specific
pathogen.

This CMR can be accessed at http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/framework/search/index.do.
Please note
Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA,
before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses
of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by
NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and
which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that
applies to those standards.
Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies
to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The
CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing
to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors
and assessors, and special resource requirements.
