Tectonic Biography

Create a report on a volcanic eruption or major earthquake from within the last 20 years. You will have TWO lab
periods for internet research and to put together your report. DO NOT simply download information. Instead you must read the
information, summarize it in your own words, and make the report an original work by you!!!! Your finished product should be
such that another student NOT IN THIS COURSE should be able to pick up your project and understand the basic processes
involved in your tectonic region.

2 - Components of the Project
Title Page and Map
Provide a title page with both a map of the region and a separate picture of your event. You can hand draw the location of the
event and label the countries and major physical features in the region (i.e. rivers, mountains, lakes, etc...). If you download a
completed map you may have to ‘clean up’ the map or add features to it.
Explain why your volcanic eruption / earthquake occurred in that region:
Create and explain diagram(s) showing the TECTONIC PLATES related to your earthquake or volcano’s existence. You may
need to create or produce a plate tectonic map of your region to show the forces creating your volcano. These should clearly show
which plates are moving to ‘create’ your event.
- Provide a description for your image which explains which direction the plates are moving and how fast.
- Create and label diagram(s) showing a cross section related to your earthquake or volcano’s existence.
- Explain the specific tectonic plates and specific processes involved in the event (Convergent, divergent, hot spot ect..).
Your explanation of the processes involved should take the form of a descriptive paragraph which also explains the main
characteristics of your volcanoes eruptions or earthquake activity (violent, small size, tsunami related, type of magma…)
Human Interaction
In one paragraph explain how the earthquake/volcano affected people. Include things like deaths, movement, destruction of homes,
buildings ect…
