1.5 Day 1 Solving Equations using Factoring
Do Now: Factor.
1) x2 – 7x + 10
2) 3x2 – 27x
3) 2x2 – 7x + 3
A ____________________ in x is an equation that can be written in the
_________________________ ax 2  bx  c  0 where a, b, and c are real
numbers, and a  0.
Example 1: Solve by factoring. (best to use if you can factor the
polynomial)
a) 4x2 – 2x = 0
b) 2x2 + 7x = 4
Example 2: Solve by the square root method. (best to use if expression is
only raised to second power, with no linear term)
a) 4x2 = 20
b) (x – 2)2 = 6
Practice:
Solve by factoring.
1) x2 = -4x – 4
2) 3x2 + 72 = 33x
3) 3x2 – 8x = 16
4) 8x2 + 3x + 2 = 7x2
5) 7x2 – 42 = -35x
6) -2x2 – x + 12 =-3x2 + 6x
Solve by taking the square root.
7) 4x2 + 2 = 326
8) 9x2 – 5 = 607
