Calendar Project Order of Operations & 1 Step Equations Optional: You can also create 2-step Equations Using the piece of construction paper provided, your own markers, colored pencils, or crayons, and your knowledge of the order of operations and one step equations and 2-step equations, you are going to create a calendar for the month of November, 2012. You may only do the month of November…. Instead of using numbers for the dates, however, you will only use the numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 to create numerical expressions and equations that, when evaluated, equal the date. For example, for the 14th, you might use: 5x4–3x2 20 – 6 = 14 Or create and solve a one-step (or 2-step) equation where x equals that date. Example of 1-step (simplify first) x+7–3=8 x+4=8 -4 -4 x=4 Keep in mind that there may be more than one way to represent any date. The 14th might also be: 2 (4 + 3) = 2(4) + 2(3) = 8 + 6 = 14 You will do this for all the days 1-30, and place the expressions in the boxes where the dates usually go. Do not write the date in the box only the numerical expression or equation!!!! The guidelines are: Points will be deducted for not following guidelines correctly. 1) The calendar must be done on the paper provided. 2) You must use at least three digits in each expression (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8) and you may use parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. HOWEVER, YOU MUST USE A MINIMUM OF 2 DIFFERENT OPERATIONS…. 3) You may use a digit only once in each numerical expression (2 + 52 may NOT be used for the 27th, because 2 is used twice in that expression). 4) You MUST follow the order of operations (PEMDAS). 2 + 3 x 5 is the 17th not the 25th. 5) At least ten of the 30 problems MUST be from your creation of 1-step equations or combination of 1 and 2 step equations. 6) You MUST show all steps for solving expressions and equations on the separate answer/worksheet provided. 7) Number and circle all answers on the answer sheet. Grading Procedures: Following Directions (see guidelines above and) Neat – Legible – Colorful - Creative 10 points 15 points Mathematically correct expressions and equations with ALL steps shown on separate answer document. 75 points 5 points will be deducted for every day the project is late.
