CCSS Mathematics Assessment Task Mrs. Smith’s Class #2 Grade Level: 2 Mathematics Domain and Cluster: Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking Cluster: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Common Core standard(s) being assessed (if the task is intended to assess only one part of the standard, underline that part of the standard): 2.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. Student Materials: Mrs. Smith’s Class Assessment (Problem #2) Pencil Hundreds Chart, Number Line, Interlocking Cubes (as needed) Teacher Materials: none Directions (for teacher to administer assessment task): Hand out the assessment (one per student) Tell students, “If you need to use a hundred chart or interlocking cubes, feel free to use them as needed.” For those students that need the problem read aloud you might want to pull them into a small group. Have students work independently on task. Prompt: See attachment. Correct or Model Answer: ☐ + ☐ = 16 16 = 1 sharpened + 15 unsharpened 16 = 2 sharpened + 14 unsharpened 16 = 3 sharpened + 13 unsharpened 16 = 4 sharpened + 12 unsharpened 16 = 5 sharpened + 11 unsharpened 16 = 6 sharpened + 10 unsharpened 16 = 7 sharpened + 9 unsharpened 16 = 8 sharpened + 8 unsharpened 16 = 9 sharpened + 7 unsharpened 16 = 10 sharpened + 6 unsharpened 16 = 11 sharpened + 5 unsharpened 16 = 12 sharpened + 4 unsharpened 16 = 13 sharpened + 3 unsharpened CCSS Mathematics Assessment Task 16 = 14 sharpened + 2 unsharpened 16 = 15 sharpened + 1 unsharpened Teacher Notes: Students can also use number strings or drawings to solve. Drawings as a strategy would not be appropriate to use at the end of the year as it is not efficient or an accurate strategy when the numbers get bigger. Scoring Guide/Rubric (a score should be awarded for each criterion below) Criteria (CCSS code) 0 points 1 Point 2.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. Student is not able to write an equation, or draw a picture or model, and solves with significant errors. Student is able to write an equation and draw a picture or model, but solves with minor inaccuracies OR student is able to write an equation or draw a model. 2 Point Student is able to write an equation AND draw a picture or a model, then solves accurately. CCSS Mathematics Assessment Task Mrs. Smith’s Class Problem #2 Second Grade Mathematics Assessment Problem: Solve the following problems by drawing and using equations. Mrs. Smith has 16 pencils. Some of them are sharpened and some of them are not. How many are sharpened and how many are not sharpened? Draw a picture that matches the number story. Write the equation:
