DIORAMA OPTION
2 major grades (display piece, oral presentation)
Display Piece
Structural Points – diorama is stable enough for display, neat and organized with good use of space,
appropriate use of color, 3 dimensional, and all parts are identifiable. (up to 50 points)
Ecosystem is clearly identified with a title (10 points).
For GT/Advanced: Title should indicate the specific Ecosystem and a map with area of the ecosystem
should be included in the display(ex: Copperas Cove City Park, or Texas Gulf Coast)
Biotic and abiotic components are included and appropriate for that ecosystem (10 points)
Minimum 3 species of animals are shown in the diorama, are appropriate for the ecosystem, and would
be found in the same community naturally; they should be labeled or included on a legend with their
common name (10 points).
For GT/Advanced: label with common and scientific name in appropriate format.
Minimum 2 species of plants are shown in the diorama, are appropriate for the ecosystem, and would be
found in the same community naturally; they should be labeled or included on a legend with their
common name (not “tree,” but “Maple tree” would be acceptable). (10 points)
For GT/Advanced: label with common and scientific name in correct format.
One possible food chain that would reasonably exist is represented in the diorama; minimum 4
organisms (including 1 producer) directly linked to each other in the chain are represented (10 points)
Total
Oral Presentation (notecards may be used, but report should not be read completely)
Report is 3-5 minutes in length with a reasonable pace and volume (3-5 minutes without long pauses or
rushing)
(up to 20 points)
Report sequence is logical and easy to follow, without unnecessary repetition (10 points)
Main ideas are identifiable and supported by facts – typed bibliography of sources required and due at
time of presentation. (10 points)
Good speaking practices – look at audience, hands not in pockets, scan the class now and then, avoid
uhm’s and uh’s, don’t read the entire report (10 points)
Ecosystem is named (10 points)
For GT/Advanced: Title should indicate the specific ecosystem and the area where the ecosystem can be
found should be included in the presentation. (ex: Copperas Cove City Park, or Texas Gulf Coast or Arctic
Tundra can be found in the northern hemisphere circumpolar between _____ and ______ latitude.)
Description of weather/climate, including annual precipitation patterns and temperature patterns (10
points)
Abiotic and biotic factors from the diorama are named (10 points)
Adaptations of at least one animal and one plant shown in the diorama are described, with support for
why those adaptations increase survival for that species in that environment (10 points)
The food chain shown in the diorama is explained, starting with the producer and continued in sequence,
explaining the roles of each organism in terms of producers and trophic levels of consumers (10 points)
