Name __________________ Period ____ Homework Project Instructions: Using materials that resemble a cell and cell organelles, construct a model of either a plant or an animal cell. You may use any materials you like, but IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO BUY SPECIAL ITEMS FOR THIS PROJECT. You may use everyday, household objects for cell parts. Your materials may be edible, but they must be able to remain fresh without refrigeration for 3 days! Make a key or labels to the cell parts, and their functions to explain your model. Example of label: Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell Basic REQUIREMENTS Each model must include all of the following organelles: Cell membrane Nucleus Cytoplasm Endoplasmic reticulum Golgi Bodies Ribosomes Mitochondria Vacuoles Lysosomes (if animal cell) Chloroplasts (if plant cell) Cell Wall (if plant cell) additional REQUIREMENTS Include your name and period on your project Identify the cell type (Tell if it is a plant or an animal cell) The model must be 3-dimensional (not a drawing done on paper or parts just painted on a styrofoam ball) Your organelles must be reasonably accurately represented in scale (size) and structure. Label all cell parts or use a key to list cell parts Extra credit presentation: You may be as artistic, creative, and humorous as you like. You may use the notes from class or internet or other resources as much as needed. Remember to see student samples in class and use worksheets with cell diagrams. Completed model is DUE FRIDAY JUNE 3RD !! NO LATE CELL MODELS EXCEPT ABSENT STUDENTS! CATEGORY Your Score Cell Type (Animal or Plant) identified on the model /Your name and period ______/5 Organelles included in model: ANIMALS: Nucleus, mitochondria, cell membrane, cytoplasm, vacuole, ribosome, lysosome, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies PLANTS: Nucleus, mitochondria, cell membrane, vacuole, ribosome, cell wall, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, chloroplast Labeling of Organelles: o o o o o Each organelle is labeled with the correct function (5 points) Each organelle is labeled with some functions/not all functions correct (4 points) Labels/functions missing on 1-2 organelles (3 points) Labels/functions missing on 3-5 organelles (2 points) Labels/functions missing on more than 5 organelles (1 point) Accuracy o o o o o The size/structure of all organelles is accurate and their relationship to each other (location in the cell) is correct (5 points) 1-2 organelles are not represented accurately in size, structure, or location (4 points) 3-4 organelles are not represented accurately in size, structure, or location (3 points) 5-6 organelles are not represented accurately in size, structure, or location (2 points) 7 or more organelles are not represented accurately in size, structure, or location (1 point) quality & Craftsmanship o o o o o It is apparent that the student put in time and effort into his/her project Each organelle is distinct and easily recognized from the key Student shows creativity in use of materials for cell Excellent use of color Realistic portrayal of organelles _____/15 _____/10 ____/10 ____/10 EXTRA CREDIT FOR CLASS PRESENTATION ______ TOTAL POINTS earned ____/50
