Chapter 21: The Furnace of Civil War, 1861-1865
The Civil War, which began as a limited struggle over the Union, eventually became a total war
to end slavery and transform the nation.
After several years of see-saw struggles, the Union armies under Grant and Sherman finally wore
down the Southern forces under Robert E. Lee and defeated the Confederates’ bid for
independence.
Objectives
1. Which of the following was the most significant battle of the Civil War: Antietam,
Gettysburg, or Vicksburg? Why?
2. Explain why General Sherman conducted the devastating “march to the sea.” Explain in what
ways this was like conducting modern “total war.”
3. Why is the Emancipation Proclamation said to be a “proclamation without emancipation”?
Explain the role of the proclamation in the formation of Northern strategy and war goals.
4. Describe the failure of the North to gain its expected early victory in 1861.
5. Describe the role of African-Americans, both Northern and Southern, free and slave.
6. Describe the political struggle between Lincoln’s “Union Party” and the Copperheads.
7. List the three most significant immediate consequences of the Civil War. Justify your
selections.
