Most populated country in the world. North China Plain ► Center of agriculture and industry ► Large portion of food comes from this region ► Land is fertile because of loess (yellow dirt) ► It has a lot of terraces (platforms of earth that look like stairs) ► The capital of China, Beijing, is located there. China’s Sorrow- The Huang He River is called China’s sorrow because it would flood and kill crops and people. ► People built levees to help control the flooding. Levees are walls that are built on the sides of the river to control the water levels. ► The water is yellow because it flows through the Gobi desert and carries the yellow silt along with it. Yangtze River ► Since the Huang He river caused so much "sorrow" people started moving south and settled near the Yangtze River. ► This river is 3,915 miles long. ► Farmers grew rice along its banks and people used the river for trade and transportation. Guangxi Zhungzu ► Weather: hot and steamy with plenty of rain and sun throughout the year. ► Long farming season ► Double cropping- two crops grown on the same land in the same year ► Shape of the land: land made of limestone (a type of rock) Roof of the World ► The Tibetan Plateau ► Mountain region in the Himalayas ► The Zhuang are the largest minority group in China and they live here. ► The Zhuang are nomads and travel with their livestock (sheep) Project ► Pick one of the three different areas of China that you would like to live in. ► List two facts about that place. ► List two things that you might see there. ► Write a letter to a friend telling them about your life in that area. You need to include the two facts about the place and the two things that people would see if they visited your area. Dear Sally, My family lives in the Tibetan Plateau. We are nomads and wonder the mountains looking for food for our sheep. We have to sleep in tents because we don’t have a house. The Tibetan Plateau is the perfect place to live if you like cold weather. Our land is called the “Roof of the World” because we are part of the Himalayan Mountain Chain. Silk was made from the thread of the silk worm. Silk was traded throughout China and Asia along the “Silk Road”. Later, religion would also be spread along this route. Eastern Zhou ► 770-221 BC ► Capital –Luoyang ► “Golden Age” of China ► New system of money encouraged trade ► The economy thrived ► Projects – flood control, irrigation, and canal building, walls were built around cities ► Used –iron to make tools and weapons ► Jobs – scholars, teachers, and government officials. He was a teacher of peace. Confucius He had many followers. He believed that it was your duty to follow leaders and gods faithfully. Famous Sayings 1. Virtue is not left to stand alone. Lesson 3 ► Qin Dynasty Qin Shi Huang ► The first Emperor of China. He ruled from 221 BC-207 BC. He was an extremely cruel ruler. He did not like anyone opposing him. He also burned books. ► He ruled appointed people to rule his provinces. This is the great wall of China. It was built to keep out northern intruders and nomadic tribes. Interesting Facts About the Great Wall ► The first section took 10 years to build ► Satellite allows scientists to see 600 miles on buried wall ► Today, it would take $260 billion dollars to build it. ► It stretches for 4,500 miles (Distance from Miami to the North Pole) ► More than one million people died building it. This averaged 333 deaths per mile. Teracotta Soldiers ► Buried in the tomb with Qin Shi Huang. The work to build it started in 246 BC and took 38 years to complete. It also took 700,000 workers to build it. No one soldier is alike.
