VS 7- Civil War The Northern and Southern states had some major differences: The economy of the southern states depended on agriculture. The Southern states wanted new states added to the Union to be slave states. The economy of the northern states depended on manufacturing of goods. The Northern states wanted new states added to the Union to be free states. The southern states needed slaves to work on the large plantations and were opposed to ending slavery. There were four major events that led the South to secede (separate) from the Union. 1. Nat Turner’s revolt 2. Abolitionists like Harriet Tubman campaigned to end slavery. 3. John Brown led a raid on Harper’s Ferry trying to start a slave rebellion. 4. Abraham Lincoln is elected President in 1860. The Western counties of Virginia (now West Virginia) disagreed with slavery. This disagreement led to the formation of West Virginia, when those western counties broke away from Virginia to form a new state, West Virginia. Major Civil War battles fought in Virginia: First Battle of Bull Run, led by Thomas Stonewall Jackson= Confederate Victory. Fredericksburg, Virginia, led by Robert E. Lee for a confederate victory. Richmond was burned to the ground by Ulysses S. Grant for a Union victory. The Battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack ended in a draw, or tie. The Civil War ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia in April 1865.
