Chapter 1, Section 1 of “Inside Earth”
Essential Question:
Notes:
How does the theory of plate tectonics explain the cycling of
Earth’s materials and the flow of
energy that drives the process?
Questions/Main Ideas:
Chapter 1: Plate Tectonics
Section 1: Earth’s Interior
*** Exploring Inside Earth
“Geologists have used two main types of evidence to learn
about Earth’s interior: direct evidence from rock samples and
indirect evidence from seismic waves.” P. 7
*** A Journey to the Center of the Earth
“The three main layers of Earth are the crust, the mantle, and
the core. These layers vary greatly in size, composition,
temperature, and pressure.” P. 9
*** The Crust
“The crust is a layer of solid rock that includes both dry land
and the ocean floor. The crust also includes the soil and water
that cover large parts of Earth’s surface”. P. 10
*** The Mantle
“Earth’s mantle is made up of rock that is very hot, but solid.
Scientists divide the mantle into layers based on the physical
characteristics of those layers. Overall, the mantle is nearly
3,000 km thick.
* “lithos” means “stone”- the lithosphere is rigid rock, similar
to the crust.
* “asthenes” means “weak”- the asthenosphere is similar to hot
road tar- it’s still (mostly) solid, but it can bend and stretch.
*** The Core
“The core is made mostly of the metals iron and nickel. It
consists of two parts- a liquid outer core and a solid inner
core”. P. 12
** “Just as a bar magnet is surrounded by its own magnetic
field, Earth’s magnetic field surrounds the planet”. P. 13

mantle, lithosphere, asthenosphere, outer core, inner core
Summary: (see p. 38)
* Geologists have two main types of evidence about Earth’s interior: direct evidence
from rock samples and indirect evidence from seismic waves (earthquake energy).
* The three main layers of Earth are the crust, the mantle, and the core. They vary in
size, composition, temperature, and pressure.
*The crust is a layer of solid rock that includes both dry land and the ocean floor.
* Earth’s mantle is made up of rock that is very hot, but solid. Two layers: the
lithosphere (rigid rock) and the asthenosphere (like hot tar, solid but able to bend and
stretch.
* The core is mostly made of iron and nickel. There is a liquid outer core and a solid
inner core.
