Mitosis Study Guide
Biology

KEY
Study the graph to the right and refer back to your notes
on the LIFE CYCLE OF THE CELL.
Describe the events that take place in each of the phases
listed below. Remember to focus on the chromosomes,
centrioles, fibers, nuclear and cell membranes
Make sure you understand what phases are part of
Interphase and what phases are part of mitosis

Terms to Know:
1. Mitosis – cell reproduction (division) where two identical cells are made ; growth and repair of the body
2. Sister chromatids – chromosome that has made a copy of itself
3. Chromatids - one half of a duplicated chromosome
4. When do chromosomes replicate (copy) themselves? Before mitosis, (during synthesis phase of INTERPHASE)
5. Synthesis stage 2nd step of Interphase when cell copies DNA
6. Cytokinesis division of the cytoplasm, occurs during mitosis
7. Interphase Consists of Gap 1, Gap 2 and synthesis. Most common phase. Growth, DNA replication, Function
8. Describe role of cell parts in mitosis
 Fibers – made of protein and pull chromosomes apart
 Chromosomes- copy themselves before step 1 (prophase)
9. Number of chromosomes after mitosis – same as the original cell
10.Number of chromosomes in human cell - 46
11.Effect of aging on mitosis- same as the original cell
12.Cancer – BODY cells reproduce at a faster rate than normal
13.Malignant – can break away and form other tumors and attack other types of tissue
14.Benign – cells that remain clustered and can be removed
15.Possible causes of cancer - chemicals, viruses, radiation
16.Impact of cancer on cells - cancer cells crowd out normal cells
