Explorer Profiles Age of Exploration: Day 1 Web quest Name: ____Ossian___________________________________________________ Date: __3/26/10_________________ Vasco de Gama: Vasco de Gama was born in 1460 to a rather wealthy Portuguese family in Sines. Vasco’s father was an explorer and was supposed to make the epic journey from Portugal to India in order to make his son famous. Unfortunately he died and could not complete his journey. King Manuel 1 financed Vasco’s journey led by Vasco. Many people believed that the trip was impossible because they thought the Atlantic Ocean did not connect with the Indian ocean, however Vasco knew it would work. On July 8, 1497, Vasco left Lisbon and set off on his voyage. May 20, 1498 Vasco had reached India. He returned Portugal in 1503 and died in India 1524. Prince Henry: Prince Henry was a sponsored explorer, he brought many great things for Portugal. He focused on training mapping skills, navigation and science preparing them for the west coast of Africa. Ferdinand Magellan: Ferdinand Magellan was born into a noble family in Sabrosa, Portugal in 1480. His adventurous spirit led him to his career as an explorer. He was the one responsible for stealing nearly two million dollars worth of gold from Spanish ships. This gold had come from the Aztec empire. In 1524 he was sent to search for a Northwest passage to Asia, passing through North America. He left for his expedition in January 1524. On the 1st of March he reached North Carolina, (Cape Fear). He continued northward along the coast line. He printed badly depicted maps of North America being split into two halves. Connected by a little strip of land. While he was exploring the Atlantic Coast of North America, as he went higher North he discovered New York Harbor, Block Island and Narragansett Bay. Today New York Harbor, Block Island and Narragansett Bay all remember his epic journey. Age of Exploration: Day 1 Web quest Name: ____Ossian___________________________________________________ Date: __3/26/10_________________ Additional Notes Mary Read and Anne Bonny: These two are the most fabled female privateers in sailing history. Mary Read died in 1721 in a Jamaican prison after having been a re-known English pirate, alongside with her was Anne Bonny. Anne Bonny was born in 1702. When she was 13 she supposedly stabbed a servant girl in the stomach. She did not disguise herself as a man in order to join Rackham’s crew. In fact, Anne and Mary helped Rackham steal the sloop upon Nassau Harbor and set sail, searching for a crew. Together they plundered many prizes. Although Bonny is one of the best pirates in history she never commanded her own ship, but she still remains a rarity, a female pirate.
