Portugal: Silk Road
In 1274, two Italians Marco and Niccolo Polo set off on a 24 year journey on
the silk road. Among the first Europeans ever to travel to the legendary
empire of china, traveling over 4,000 miles. They befriended and worked for
Kublai Kahn.
Spain: Spices
Europeans used spices to preserve meat, take away the smell of rotten foods
and make themselves smell nice. The most commonly sold spices were
ginger, pepper and cinnamon.
France: The Indies
Portugal successfully sent an explorer to the Indies by sending him around
Africa and through the Indian ocean. Christopher Columbus figured that it
would be possible to sail west, his theory led to the discovery of North
America and more land for Spain.
France: Pirates
Sailing the seas in the 1500’s was not only threatened by storms and weather
but most dangerously pirates. Pirates were most fables on what was called
“The Barbary Coast.” The pirates on the Barbary Coast were Islamic and stole
from English ships.

Legends,
Destinations,
and Goals
Converting Natives:
The goal of most explorers was to spread the Christian faith and belief.
Life on Ship:
Sailing was most usually quite miserable. Sailors endured the fear of sea
storms, malnutrition, little privacy and disgusting living quarters. The food
they lived off usually consisted of maggoty stale bread.
Pirates:
Sailing in the 1500’s was dangerous business. Storms and diseases like scurvy
were not the only threat at sea but pirates were too. Pirates were most famous
along the fabled Barbary coast. This was where Islamic pirates plundered the
English ships along the North African coast.
Sea Monsters:
In the 1400 and 1500’s the seas of the world had not nearly been explored.
Certain portion of the populations of people believed in myths and legends
that today we find a joke. They described one of them as the Kraken that
could envelop whole ships in just one bite. This feared creature may have
been the Giant Squid.

Vasco de Gama:
Vasco de Gama was born in 1460 to a rather wealthy Portuguese family in
Sines. Vasco’s father was an explorer and was supposed to make the epic
journey from Portugal to India in order to make his son famous. Unfortunately
he died and could not complete his journey. King Manuel 1 financed Vasco’s
journey led by Vasco. Many people believed that the trip was impossible
because they thought the Atlantic Ocean did not connect with the Indian
ocean, however Vasco knew it would work. On July 8, 1497, Vasco left
Lisbon and set off on his voyage. May 20, 1498 Vasco had reached India. He
returned Portugal in 1503 and died in India 1524.
Prince Henry:
Prince Henry was a sponsored explorer, he brought many great things for
Portugal. Prince Henry discovered most of west Africa, and also succeeded in
spreading Christianity and defeating Muslims. In 1419 Henry started a
navigation school at Sagres in Portugal. He focused on training mapping
skills, navigation and science preparing them for the west coast of Africa.
Ferdinand Magellan:
Ferdinand Magellan was born into a noble family in Sabrosa, Portugal in
1480. His adventurous spirit led him to his career as an explorer. In 1506 He
went to the spice Islands also known as Indonesia in order to participate in
military explorations. In 1510 he was promoted to the rank of a captain. In
1512 he was in morocco and made plans for a westward way to the Spice
Islands. In 1517 he renounced his citizenship with Portugal and offered his
service to the King of Spain. The King of Spain (Charles 1) agreed to finance
Magellan’s trip hoping to become the king of the richest nation in the world.
Giovanni da Verrazano:
Giovanni da Verrazano was born in 1485 in his family’s castle in Italy. In
1507 he moved to Dieppe hoping to pursue a career in navigation. While he
was in Dieppe he made journeys to the Eastern Mediterranean. He spent many
of his years as a pirate. He would attack and plunder Spanish and Portuguese
sea vessels. He was the one responsible for stealing nearly two million dollars
worth of gold from Spanish ships. This gold had come from the Aztec empire.
In 1524 he was sent to search for a Northwest passage to Asia, passing
through North America. He left for his expedition in January 1524. On the 1st
of March he reached North Carolina, (Cape Fear). He continued northward
along the coast line. He printed badly depicted maps of North America being
split into two halves. Connected by a little strip of land. While he was
exploring the Atlantic Coast of North America, as he went higher North he
discovered New York Harbor, Block Island and Narragansett Bay. Today
New York Harbor, Block Island and Narragansett Bay all remember his epic
journey.

Additional
Notes
Mary Read and Anne Bonny:
These two are the most fabled female privateers in sailing history. Mary Read
died in 1721 in a Jamaican prison after having been a re-known English
pirate, alongside with her was Anne Bonny. Anne Bonny was born in 1702.
When she was 13 she supposedly stabbed a servant girl in the stomach. She
did not disguise herself as a man in order to join Rackham’s crew. In fact,
Anne and Mary helped Rackham steal the sloop upon Nassau Harbor and set
sail, searching for a crew. Together they plundered many prizes. Although
Bonny is one of the best pirates in history she never commanded her own
ship, but she still remains a rarity, a female pirate.
