Europeans Explore the East
God, glory and gold were the primary motives for exploration
Gold

the desire for new sources of wealth


Treaty of Tordesillas

The Pope drew an imaginary line through the Atlantic Ocean known as the Line of
Demarcation. Under this treaty, Spain was granted all the unclaimed or new lands
to the west and Portugal was granted all the unclaimed or new lands to the east.

reached the tip. Then they returned home

Vasco da Gama - began exploring the east African coast. He reached the coast of
India and gave Portugal a direct sea route to India

Christopher Columbus –convinced Spain that he could find a route to Asia by sailing
west across the Atlantic Ocean
