Please use this form to request and justify capital outlay expenditures for the California Career Pathways grant.
Capital outlay is defined as any single item purchase of $5,000.00 or more. The purchase must meet all the
requirements below. Please check all that apply:
Directly relates to a program approved for assistance with Pathway funds in the LEA's application;
Intended to improve, enhance or expand the Pathway program;
"Necessary" and "reasonable" for proper and efficient administration of the CTE program;
Added to the district’s historical inventory system when received; and
Specific to a pathway program—as opposed to a general expense required to carry out the agency's
responsibilities.
Please complete each item below.
District Address: 1705 Any Street
City, Zip: Any Town, CA 95555
Pathways Phone Contact: (222) 555-5555
Industry Sector: Agriculture
Career Pathway: Agricultural Mechanics
Name of Item: Torchmate3 CNC Cutting System
Name of school for item: Any High School
Total cost of item including tax and shipping $ 20,895.86
Total Cost of Package if different from item: N/A
Description of Item:
The Torchmate 3 comes with dual 380 oz. in. motors on the X (long) axis, and one 380 oz. in. motor on the Y axis. The
drive system is dual rack and pinion with 5:1 low backlash gearbox reduction. A test indicator has measured positioning
accuracy at 1 1/2 thousandths of an inch (.0015"). The X axis motors and gear racks are outside the frame rails on both
sides of the machine and are protected by a 1" steel rail overhang, keeping clear of any debris caused by the cutting
process. The 1 1/4 x 3/8" gear racks are specially manufactured for the Torchmate 3. They have far more rigidity than
conventional square gear racks, ensuring that they are perfectly straight for their entire length.
Purpose of Purchase:
The purpose of a new Torchmate3 CNC Cutting System will be to teach the students how to program, set up,
and safely operate modern shop equipment with state of the art technology. The entire plasma cam table and
assembly heightens the metal fabrication process for welding facilities to the level of current industry standards.
Certifications will be based on students understanding the skills needed to operate this piece of equipment.
Please contact Natalie Pacheco at (209) 744-4250 ext. 6163 or [email protected], or Mark Anglin at
(209) 631-3504 or [email protected] with questions.
Created 9/3/2015
What skill attainment will this equipment purchase provide to students?
The skills that will be enhanced will be the plasma arc cutting process, technology and computer design,
fabrication, measurement, and safety. There is also a software component to this technology that helps
incorporate the design into the final product. The skills needed to develop the software design, transfer
computer files and designing images onto a computer, and then apply the machine process that will produce
the final product are necessary skills for the Ag Mechanics industry. The system can also be used to cut metal
into specific and unique dimensions used for many applications in welding and fabrication.
More specifically it will provide Agricultural Mechanics Pathway students with:








Currency in the instruction of Agricultural Mechanics pathway using state of the art equipment found in
industry
An opportunity to use Auto Cad or Solid Works programs for designing projects
More accurate metal cutting ability
The opportunity to more efficiently use metal materials
A safe working environment as the water table will remove smoke particulates from the student’s work
area
CNC robotic cutting skills
The skill to fabricate a project that they will personally design using Solid Works software
The skill to fabricate project components instead ordering them pre-fabricated through a local steel
company giving them real world experiences.
Specific Technical Skills will include but not be limited to:








Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine operation
Metal Identification skills
CNC Machine Troubleshooting
Plasma operation including the ability to calculate arc voltage and amperage
Fabrication Layout skills
Artistic expression
Machine Operation Safety
