It will operate from 1 to 5 um and will offer two plate scales and a range of dispersions. The instrument was scheduled received at Cerro Pachon October 2003. See regular monthly reports on the web at http://www.noao.edu/ets/gnirs/. GNIRS has found it’s home! December 12, 2003 ETS Projects & Departments 2 December 2003 N-MM-050 MONSOON DESCRIPTION: The MONSOON Image Acquisition System is the NOAO solution for scalable, multichannel high-speed image acquisition system. Additional information can be found at the MONSOON website http://www.noao.edu/ets/monsoon/. The MONSOON system has progressed past the initial stages with three systems tested and operational – two IR systems and one CCD Prototype system. Work is now focused on the development of the CCD 8 channel Lab system, the 64 channel IR Lab system and the 256 channel MONSOON for NEWFIRM system. RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS This month we held the MONSOON Status review (Dec.1, 2003). The Clock and Bias Board has been put out to quote mid-December for 9 boards for the NEWFIRM. Work is progressing on the IR Lab MONSOON system for testing the new Orion II devices. Work has continued on the CCD Lab MONSOON system designed to characterize the OTA CCD devices. Work has continued on the NEWFIRM MONSOON system power supplies and enclosure for the subsystem. Some parts are in and the rest are due in within the next two months. We have also continued working on the configuration database/spreadsheet for the downloading to the PAN/DHE. PLANS: Oct '03 Evaluate the bids for the IR Acquisition boards due in January and order the NEWFIRM boards. Finish revising the Master Control Board, implementing the changes found on the first set of boards. Put out the CCD Acquisition card and MCB for bid and manufacture. Complete the test and analysis on the 36 channels of the IR Acquisition boards. Complete the IR Lab ORION test system and install in the IR Lab. Continue the CPLD and FPGA OTA firmware development (Dave Sawyer assisting). Develop/identify/modify waveform definition language and create MPU sequencer compiler to enable efficient sequencer coding. The delivery of NEWFIRM to the telescope for commissioning is scheduled for June 2005. A draft of the concepts for this instrument can be found at http://www.noao.edu/ets/newfirm/newfcon.html. FY 04 Budgeted Hours Budgeted Capital Actual Hours Actual Capital 8,937.90 $349,153 1294 $122,177 GENERAL: The detail designs of the last lens cell groups are nearly complete, and will be released for fabrication in midJanuary. Work on the Dewar assembly detailing is nearly complete and will be released for bids to two vendors in early January. The Environmental Cover 3D design is complete. The ICD is in final update and the assembly will be released to NOAOI South in early January. CTIO engineering is working on Filter Wheel design and the assembly is on schedule. The Guider mechanical design is proceeding on plan. The Guider electrical design is slightly behind plan but should complete on schedule. Lens 2, 3, and 5 and the mirror are complete and have been received from Janos. Still outstanding are lenses 6 and 7 from Janos, and 1, 4 and 8 from the U of A. Optics are on schedule. The overall project is on schedule except for delays in releasing lens cell groups to fabrication, and completing the dewar assembly design. There is sufficient contingency in the schedule so there is no impact on the June 2005 instrument delivery date at this time. SCHEDULE: The NEWFIRM project schedule and milestone chart may be viewed on the project web site at www.noao.edu/ets/newfirm. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: First lens cell group released for fabrication PLANS: Release Dewar to vendors for bid in early January Release all lens cells to fabrication by mid-January Personnel Changes: Mark Hunten has assumed responsibility for NEWFIRM electronics design. Made some progress in getting the Linux version of Hydra 4.2.1 to work with real hardware; the last hurdle appears to be glitches in interprocess communications. Moved from RS-232 to RS-485 for communication with Hydra II Smart Motors; previous problems disappeared after Dave Dryden made a new cable. Worked with Daryl Willmarth and Heidi Schweiker to release the Linux version of the Hydra Simulator package to the public alongside the original SunOS version; the Hydra manual, revised and updated by Daryl, covers the minor differences between the SunOS and the Linux version. Spent some time on reports that the WIYN telescope's motor monitor values reported for azimuth and elevation appeared to be the same for motor No. 1; asked Doug Williams to perform some verification tests; the puzzling results were followed by site engineer's input that there has been a long standing problem of "cross talk" between those particular Az and El channels, with no remedy in sight. Installed NetBSD, OpenBSD, and FreeBSD on two vintage Sun Ultras and a PC laptop past its glory days. These, currently residing in my office, will give me a chance to experiment with other alternatives to Linux. Nick Buchholz 1. Continued development of the MONSOON software. Completed coding for: attribute command library, modified libraries to accommodate changes needed by continued development. 2. Completed testing set/get methods for attributes in DHE and PAN. 3. Completed coding on ppx Commands. 4. Continued software testing using actual aladdin Hardware test set. 5. Completed testing Sequencer code Download routines. 6. Tested ppxPass command. 7. Tested setMode and arr, exp, idp and dld Config commands. 8. Worked on procedures for initialization and setup of PAN. 9. Continued efforts to test multiple process coordination in PAN. 10. Discussed DHS interface. Phil Daly 10% overhead 10% holidays 20% MONSOON 60% NEWFIRM On MONSOON, there was some tidying of code in relation to testing out the full up system. Still some way to go since we can only get at the hardware in the morning. Some discussion with Ken Mighell regarding his Beowulf cluster and NEWFIRM data rates - passed the gist of this (that Ken could have a DHS pipeline up and running by April) to David Sprayberry. Attended an acrimonious DHS interface meeting (and took along a wet sponge and a towel). NEWFIRM now has infrastructure for NOCS (common code used by various TCL software suites), a complete NOHS and a first cut at NDGI. Also received the SDT (survey definition tool) from Martin Folger at UKATC and installed it but not looked at it in detail yet. Chaired a meeting of the NEWFIRM software group - main plan is deferred to January because of the holiday period. Shelby Gott I've completed all of the requested improvements in the MONSOON Engineering Console: 1. Added "memory configuration" to the configuration window. 2. Added the use of the "ppxDump" command to get a list of categories, then to get lists of variables in each category from panDaemon. Provided value display and entry fields for each variable. 3. Added a tcl interpreter to the command line, so users can type PPX or tcl commands. I've installed this latest version on "decapod", and am waiting for user comments. Compiled the Bench GUI successfully on "indus". Added a menu selection for the "sparsePak" fiber cable so that its focal ratio and core diameter can be used when calculating minimum camera distance and image size. Testing with the real spectrograph is planned for the Jan 5 - 7 T&E. ETS Projects & Departments 12 December 2003 Observatory Software Engineering (OSE) Group (cont.) Discussed requirements with Charles for a data acquisition system to display WTTM x-y values. This looks like it might be a good embedded ethernet application, so I've been trying out the Ethernut board that I acquired last February. So far, I've compiled and tested a sample application using both Windows- and Linux-based development tools. Looks promising. Bob Marshall Projects: DVD Writers: At the 4-meter, built, installed, and tested the software (dvdrecord) for the DVD writer on 'tan'. A 4meter observer tried to use DVD+R media in the drive, but after tests on the downtown system I concluded that the software we use only supports DVD-R media. The observer switched to DVD-R media and had no problems. Operations: At the WIYN T&E tested a configuration using VNC that fixes the color map problem with 'ximtool' that resulted after the upgrade of 'sand' to RedHat 7.3. After testing with different window managers and parameter settings had to return the system to RedHat 6.2 due to a keyboard focus problem with the new configuration. At the WIYN Software meeting we decided to provide 'ds9' as the default image display so that we can proceed with the 7.3 upgrade. A new version of 'ximtool' which supports 24-bit displays is due in the next few months. Fixed the "LTO Report" web page on "rose". Answered questions from observers about printer access and Linux graphics setup. Maintenance: Coude Feed: printer problems. Other: Completed performance evaluations. Processed several orders: DVD media, 120GB disks, software for DIMM support, laptops. Took 2 weeks vacation. Dave Mills [See January 2004 report] Peter Ruckle The Phoenix SOAR interface is now functional. It can be run from the motor interface command line. The next step is to write tcl code that can be run from wfire. Code from other similar mechanisms can be used and modified for this purpose. The last step is to modify the config files for the telescope and run it at SOAR. This probably won't happen until the second half of 2004 at the earliest. Clean up efforts are still hanging around for GNIRS. There is some testing to be done by GEMINI and possibly some further work on my part. Again, this should only take a few days. ETS Projects & Departments 13 December 2003 Risk Management (C. Gessner) A Kitt Peak employee reported falling from a slippery surface that cause bruising to the back and arm, December 28. A workers compensation claim was filed and the employee is seeking a precautionary diagnostic medical evaluation. At present, this case is considered first aid. Anti-slip material will be applied to the surface. Due to the annual floor cleaning, various aluminum blocks from the instrument shop were moved to the service yard on December 17, 2003. It was noticed that the stock was missing that afternoon. An E-mail was sent out to Tucson_All describing what was taken. Three NOAO employees responded and stated that they observed a contractor loading material into a vehicle. After investigation and without physical evidence, it was determined that the contractor’s employees were the likely suspects. The owner of the company was notified and the owner took appropriate disciplinary action. It is estimated that the value of the aluminum was $550.00 and has not been recovered. Items accomplished this month: Assisted STScI’s Ms. Gene Bryant with the classification and reporting requirements of an occurred at their Maryland facility in December. Completed the “Specifications for Unarmed Security Services” for the Tucson facility and thanks to Christine Stone the contract was completed. A pre-bid meeting was held on January 19, 2003, with five bidders attending. Bids are due January 14, 2004. Nine employees representing Kitt Peak Facilities, Kitt Peak Instrument Specialists and four U of A employees attended the eight-hour Kitt Peak Crane and Rigging course on December 10. Provided an ergonomic review with recommendations for one of our employees. It appears that the employee has gained relief by implementing some of the recommendations. Provided safety advisement and overview for the LSST office additions in the Tucson M1 area. Established a contract with a vendor that will aid in our compliance with 29 CFR 1910.134 Respiratory Protection Standard. The relatively new standard requires completion of a confidential Respiratory Protection Medical Form by employees that are respirator users, review of the questionnaire by a physician or licensed health care professional who will make the determination as to whether an employee can use a respirator and whether a follow up medical examination is required. The vendor is also capable of providing respirator fit testing. Employees that use respirators will be notified and schedule for the review in the coming months. Provided consultation and procured personal protective equipment and oil containment material needed for glass cutting in the Optics shop. Kitt Peak and Tucson underground gasoline storage tanks were tested for tank tightness on January 16, 2003 as required by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. All tanks passed. Properly disposed of 160 pounds of burned out fluorescent light bulbs from Kitt Peak and Tucson. The light bulbs were sent to a recycling facility that makes new light bulbs. With the help of CFO staff, we assumed the role of meter officers and ticketed thirty-two illegally parked vehicles in NOAO parking lots during the month of December. As the secretary of the American Society of Safety Engineers, participated in the development of a “Competent Persons – Safety at Heights” seminar that will be held in Tucson, March 3-5, 2004. Three NOAO employees have been identified as possible attendees. Consulted and worked on a number of other risk management issues including issuing of key cards, safety glasses, department file backup, restocking of medical and safety equipment, oxygen sensor for the Penn State project, preparation for the possibility of the management of radiation sources due to future projects, and attempting to recover funds for minor damage to a parking lot fence by a third party.
