of One.

What it Means to be Pure in Heart
The pure in heart do the right thing for the right
reason.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Examples:
o Therefore, to be pure in heart is not about sinless perfection,
but rather the motivation of the heart:
Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin?”
Proverbs 20:9
o Therefore, this can be seen as a relative perfection, not an
absolute perfection.
o “Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways
you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the
people you can. As long as ever you can.” John Wesley
o It is a purity of heart that flows from being in Christ:
Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to
you. John 15:3
Text Message:
o The meaning of “pure in heart” is further defined, as Jesus
gives living pictures of what pure in heart is and is not.
o The Jews had “three pillars of piety;” three means by which
one lived out their faith: Almsgiving, Prayer, and Fasting.
o In Matthew 6:1-18, Jesus reveals the lack of purity of heart by
some unnamed religious leaders, probably the Pharisees.
o Here, Jesus shows the difference between the pure in heart
and those who are not:
1) Three times He refers to the religious as “hypocrites”
(Verses 2, 5, 16). The word was from the world of Greek
drama, and referred to an actor behind a mask.
2) Four times Jesus refers to impure motivations:
“to be seen by [them, others]” (Verses 1, 5, 16).
“to be praised by them” (Verse 2).
3) Three times Jesus gives the value of a pure heart: “your
Father who sees in secret will reward you” (Verses 4, 6,
18).
o We can apply this lesson to all that we do as followers of
Jesus: Worship, Service, Praying, Giving, Leading, etc.
The pure in heart will see God as a present reality.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
Text Message:
o Underline the phrase, “they shall see God.”
o While ancient Jews would not deny the seeing of God in “the
world to come,” the primary thought of seeing God would be
that of hope fulfilled in the present life.
o To see God was to experience God’s promise of dwelling
among His people (Exodus 29:45, etc.).
o Therefore, the People of the Presence do not merely have the
hope of heaven, but God’s presence in the here and now in
worship, serving, praying, and giving.
You are now entering your mission field!
