Community Ecology Test Part I: Community Interactions and Energy Flow
Review Sheet
Test will be given in a 55 minute period. During that time you will be asked to answer multiple choice,
matching, and/or diagram analysis type questions. This is one of the two parts to each test. The
second part is a Short Answer part which requires you to write complete sentence answers to a variety
of questions. The questions may be for you to explain, analyze or formulate an answer to an essay
type question. Each test requires a blue or black pen and a pencil.
Be able to….
1. Define community ecology
2. Describe the various types of community interactions
a. Symbiosis – mutualism, commensalism, parasitism – recognize them in a community
b. Predation
c. Herbivory
d. Competition – interspecific and intraspecfic
3. Review the Power Point on the Role of the Predator – Explain the significance of
an “apex” predator in an ecosystem. Besides the example of the Wolves of Yellowstone, know about
the Starfish Piaster of which was discussed in the Section 37.11
4. Explain, describe or identify a trophic cascade.
5. Explain what a keystone species is.
5. Describe the effects of an invasive species. Look over the Cane Toad video questions. Know what
is meant by biological control. Can you come up with pros and the cons of using a biological control.
6. Define the term “adaptation”. Recognize or describe specific adaptations which organisms have.
7. Review all the terms listed in the Modeling Energy Transfer lab which you defined.
8. Why is the transfer of energy in an ecosystem referred to as energy flow, not energy cycling?
9. Describe each of the ecological pyramids:
a. Energy (Production) pyramid
b. Numbers
c. Biomass
10. What is primary production? What is net primary production?
11. What unit describe the amount of energy at a trophic level?
12. What unit describes the amount of biomass at a trophic level?
13. What is the 10% Rule in Community Ecology? What happens to the other 90% of the energy?
14. Understand the POGIL worksheets – Model 1, Model 2 and Model 3
15. To define or identify producer, primary consumer, secondary consumer, tertiary consumer, and
quaternary consumer. Know how these terms relate to a food chain.
16. What is the difference between a food chain and a food web.
17. What are two units that can be used to express primary production?
18. What determines the number of trophic levels in a production pyramid?
Look over Connecting the Concepts Questions #1 and #2 on pages 760 and 761.
Review all power points on teacher web page.
Anything else? Check your notes.
The Modeling Energy Transfer in Oats Lab calculations will not be on the test.
