Description
Portable radiation scanners (PRS) are instruments with the
highest sensitivity, which an individual can still utilize in a
mobile mode. The main area of PRSs applications is mobile
radiation screening for pedestrians, vehicles and cargo in
public/urban areas, or at border crossing points where the
deployment of standard fixed-installed RPM is not feasible
or practical. The RPS can be used as a primary tool for
detection of orphan sources or radiological area
reconnaissance.

Being similar in its intended application to an RID, the
instrument has the same main functions: detection, location,
dose rate indication and radionuclide identification. The
instrument design however significantly differs from that of
RID, originating from its larger size and intended use for
cover detection.
Configuration
The principal components of the instruments are gamma and
neutron radiation detectors, a multichannel analyzer (if an
PRS features radionuclide identification), a processing unit,
a satellite navigation system, a graphic indicator, alarm
annunciator (audio signal, voice output on Personal Digital
Assistor (PDA) speaker or headset, vibration alarm) and
rechargeable batteries. The instrument housing interior
should not attract public attention during a covert survey.

instrument as dangerous goods due to the possible
presence of calibration sources and or pressurized gas

Power supply
Battery lifetime, if used with re-chargeable batteries,
should be at least 8 hours.The instrument shall have a
low battery indicator.

If applicable, a battery charger shall operate from
single-phase a.c. supply voltage of 230 V with a
supply voltage tolerance of + 10 % – 15 % and a
supply frequency of 47 Hz to 51 Hz.

Operation modes
As a minimum, PRS shall have two operation modes
– easy and expert modes.
The following information and control shall be
provided in easy mode of operation:
(a) View operational status
(b) View alarm indication
(c) Ability to reset alarms, and
(d) View
identified
radionuclide(s)

categorization (user selectable through
advanced or supervisory access).
The following information and control shall be
provided for the supervisory user through the use of
access controls or special commands in expert mode:
(a) Access to and control of operating
parameters (radionuclide library, alarm

(e) Access to radionuclide identification results
and control of basic indication function

Dynamic sensitivity to
gamma
The instrument shall alarm when it is exposed to an
increase in the ambient radiation level greater than
0.05 μSv/h within 1 s of the step change. The PRS
should meet this requirement in a gamma energy
range from 0.05 MeV to 1.33 MeV.

Accuracy of dose rate

Displayed exposure rates shall be within ±50% of the
conventionally true value of the applied exposure rate
using Am-241, Cs-137, and Co-60.

Design requirements
The mass of the complete instrument should not
exceed 10 kg.
Communication interface
The instrument shall have the ability to transfer data ANSI N42.43
to an external device, such as a computer. The par. 5.10.1
transfer should be based on a bi-directional port that
meets the requirements of Ethernet, USB, wireless, or

other electronic means, such as a removable media
device. The technique used shall conform to
applicable IEEE protocols. The transferred data shall
be in the XML format following the format defined
in ANSI N42.42. When used, wireless techniques
shall have the ability to be encrypted.
