Civil War Layered Book Foldable Battles of the Civil War The American Civil War began in April of 1861 with the battle of ________________, South Carolina. The Union surrendered the fort to the Confederates after a 24 hour bombardment. As 1861 continued, the Union attacked the Confederacy at ___________________, Virginia. This attempt to capture the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virginia failed as the Confederacy won. The Union would continue to try to capture Richmond for over three years. At this early battle, both sides realized that their armies needed to be well trained and equipped. The Union’s other strategy was to capture the Mississippi River. This would cut the Confederacy into 2 parts. The North succeeded in this plan by capturing the 2 major forts and cities on the Mississippi River: ____________________, Louisiana (Jan/1862) and _______________________, Mississippi (July/1863). By controlling this river, the Yankees could prevent Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas from sending troops and supplies to the eastern Confederacy. The South also had strategies to help win the war. Most of the time they tried to prevent Union armies from invading the South, but twice, the Confederacy invaded Union states. The first rebel attack happened in September, 1862 at _____________________, Maryland. This was the bloodiest battle of the war and 25,000 men were killed or wounded. There was no clear winner as the Confederates withdrew to Virginia and the Union army did not pursue. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee and Confederate President Jefferson Davis hoped that a victorious invasion of the North would convince Great Britain and France to become allies with the South. The rebels hoped the threat of European invasion from Canada would convince the Union to recognize the independence of the Confederacy. However, the Yankees stopped the Southern army and the invasion failed. The following year, General Lee again invaded the North and fought the war’s largest battle at ___________________, Pennsylvania (July 1863). The Union won the battle and Europe never allied itself with the South and the final years of the war brought more Yankee victories until finally in April, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at __________________________, Virginia.
