Course Title: Intermediate Algebra
Semester: Fall
Objectives:
Students will demonstrate the ability to:
1. compare, order, and identify number systems.
2. determine the absolute value of a number and use this concept to calculate the
distance between two real numbers.
3. use order of operations (including exponents) to evaluate an expression with and
without the use of calculators.
4. identify properties of real numbers, and use properties to perform operations with
rational numbers.
5. perform operations and evaluate expressions using the properties of exponents.
6. simplify and evaluate algebraic expressions.
7. translate a verbal phrase into an algebraic expression.
8. solve and graph equations in one unknown.
9. identify equivalent forms of percents, decimals and fractions and solve related
problems.
10. use ratios and proportions for problem solving.
11. use mathematical modeling to solve business-related, mixture, rate, and work
problems.
12. solve and graph linear inequalities.
13. solve absolute-value equations and inequalities.
14. plot points on the Cartesian coordinate system.
15. use the distance formula to determine the distance between two points.
16. graph linear equations in two unknowns using the point-plotting, intercept-intercept,
and slope-intercept methods.
17. write the equation of a line in slope-intercept and standard forms.
18. use slope to determine whether two lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither.
19. use linear model to solve application problems.
20. perform operations using polynomials.
21. write the factored form of polynomials.
22. solve polynomial equations by factoring.
