The Appendicular Skeleton
Intro to Appendicular Skeleton
• Includes bones of limbs & supporting
girdles (pectoral & pelvic)
• Provides muscle attachment for movement
• Typical structure:
• Epiphysis = head
• Diaphysis = shaft
• Neck separates head & shaft
8-1: The Pectoral Girdle
• Consists of clavicles & scapulae
• Join with skeletal muscles for arm
movement
8-2: Upper Limbs
• Consists of humerus, ulna, radius, carpals,
metacarpals & phalanges
• Humerus = upper arm; ulna & radius =
lower arm
• Carpals = wrist bones; metacarpals =
palm; phalanges = fingers
8-3: Pelvic Girdle
• Consists of 2 coxal bones
• Three bones fused together: ilium, ischium,
& pubis
• Provides attachment points for femur,
sacrum, & muscles
• Female pelvis broader than male pelvis
8-4: Lower Limbs
• Consists of femur, patella, tibia, fibula,
tarsals, metatarsals & phalanges
• Femur = upper leg; tibia & fibula =
lower leg
• Tarsals = heel region; metatarsals =
arch; phalanges = toes
