He also presided over the convention that drafted the Constitution, which replaced the Articles of Confederation. Washington is universally regarded as the "father of his country. 2. Thomas Jefferson/1743 – 1826/ Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the USA. At the beginning of the American Revolution, he served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France. Jefferson was the first United States Secretary of State (1790–1793). Abraham Lincoln /1809 – 1865/ Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the USA. He successfully led his country through the American Civil War – preserving the Union while ending slavery, and promoting economic and financial modernization. He was the leader of the moderate faction of the Republican party, and at the end of the war he held a moderate view of Reconstruction. His Gettysburg Address of 1863 became the most quoted speech in American history. Lincoln was assassinated by actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. He has been consistently ranked as one of the three greatest U.S. presidents. 4. Theodore Roosvelt /1858 – 1919/ Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919) was the 26th President of the USA. He was a leader of the Republican Party and founder of the first incarnation of the short-lived Progressive ("Bull Moose") Party of 1912. Roosevelt's achievements as a naturalist, explorer, hunter, author, and soldier are as much a part of his fame as any office he held as a politician. Roosevelt was 42 years old when sworn in as President of the United States in 1901, making him the youngest president ever. He was also the first US president to have won the Nobel Peace Prize. 5. Woodrow Wilson / 1856 – 1924/ Thomas Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 – February 3, 1924) was the 28th President of the USA. In his first term as President Wilson persuaded a Democratic Congress to pass major progressive reforms. He became a major advocate for the women's suffrage. Narrowly re-elected in 1916, he had full control of American entry into World War I, and his second term centered on World War I and the subsequent peace treaty negotiations in Paris. For his sponsorship of the League of Nations, Wilson was awarded the 1919 Nobel Peace Prize. 6. Franklin Delano Roosvelt / 1882 – 1945/ Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), also known by his initials, FDR, was the 32nd President of the USA and a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and total war. A Democrat and the only American president elected to more than two terms, he facilitated a durable coalition that realigned American politics for decades. He worked closely with Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin in leading the Allies against Germany and Japan in World War II. Harry S. Truman/ 1884 – 1972/ Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was the 33rd President of the USA. Under Truman, the U.S. successfully concluded World War II; in the aftermath of the conflict, tensions with the Soviet Union increased, marking the start of the Cold War. His presidency was a turning point in foreign affairs, as the nation supported an internationalist foreign policy in conjunction with European allies. He assisted in the founding of the United Nations, issued the Truman Doctrine to contain communism, and passed the $12 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. He oversaw the creation of NATO in 1949 and sent US troops to the Korean War. 8. John Fitzgerald Kennedy /1917 – 1963/ John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), often referred to by his initials JFK, was the 35th President of the United States, serving from 1961 until he was assassinated in 1963. Kennedy was the youngest man elected President; the only Catholic president, and the only president to have won a Pulitzer Prize. Events during his presidency included the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Space Race, the African-American Civil Rights Movement, and early stages of the Vietnam War. 9. Richard Milhous Nixon / 1913 – 1994/ Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) was the 37th President of the USA, and the only president to resign the office. Although Nixon initially escalated America's involvement in the Vietnam War, he subsequently ended US involvement in 1973. He initiated wars on cancer and drugs, imposed wage and price controls, enforced desegregation of Southern schools and established the Environmental Protection Agency. His second term saw an Arab oil embargo, the resignation of his vice president, Spiro Agnew, and a continuing series of revelations about the Watergate scandal, which led him to his resignation in 1974. 10. Jimmy Carter / 1924/ James Earl "Jimmy" Carter, Jr. (born October 1, 1924) is an American politician who served as the 39th President of the USA, and was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. He created the Department of Energy and the Department of Education. In foreign affairs, Carter pursued important treaties, and returned the Panama Canal Zone to Panama. The end of his presidential tenure was marked by serious problems such as the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan or the United States boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. Ronald Wilson Reagen / 1911 – 2004/ Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the USA. Prior to that, he was the 33rd Governor of California (1967–75), and a radio, film and television actor. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics", advocated reducing tax rates to stimulate economic growth. He supported anti-communist movements worldwide, and his second term was primarily marked by foreign matters, such as the ending of the Cold War, the 1986 bombing of Libya, and the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair. 12. eorge Herbert Walker Bush / 1924/ George Herbert Walker Bush (born June 12, 1924) is an American politician who served as the 41st President of the USA. During his tenure, Bush headed administration task forces on deregulation and fighting the "War on Drugs". Foreign policy drove his presidency; military operations were conducted in Panama and the Persian Gulf; the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 and the Soviet Union dissolved two years later. He implemented Don't ask, don't tell, a controversial intermediate step to full gay military integration. He successfully passed welfare reform and the State Children's Health Insurance Program. He was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice in a scandal involving a White House intern, but was acquitted by the U.S. Senate and served his complete term of office. 14. George Walker Bush / 1946/ George Walker Bush (born July 6, 1946) is an American politician and businessman who was the 43rd President of the USA from 2001 to 2009 and the 46 th Governor of Texas from 1995 to 2000. Bush was elected president in 2000 after a close and controversial election, becoming the fourth president to be elected while receiving fewer popular votes nationwide than his opponent. Bush is the second president to have been the son of a former president. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks occurred, he announced the War on Terror, which included the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq. He also promoted policies on the economy, health care, education, and social security reform.
