ABSOLUTE PURITY
The word absolute in the Oxford Dictionary means complete, perfect and pure. When we look
at scripture and what God says, we see man’s heart is far from being pure.
We are told in Jeremiah 17:9-10 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately
wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man
according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”
We live, act, speak, think etc from that which is in our hearts. In Matthew 12:34-35 Jesus said, “O
generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the
heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth
good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.”
The good treasure is the Word of God that is put into the heart by God. His word cleanses,
purifies and sanctifies our hearts. 2 Corinthians 3:3 says, “Forasmuch as ye are manifestly
declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the
living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.”
The amount of Word that goes into our hearts, depends upon the heart itself as shown in the
parable of the sower and the seed.
In Matthew 15:16-20 again concerning the heart we read, “And Jesus said, Are ye also yet
without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth
into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth
come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts,
murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which
defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.”
God wants to purify our hearts so we can be pure like He is. We see this in Titus 2:13-14 which
says, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our
Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and
purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
In James 4:8 He says, “Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye
sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.” Amplified Bible “Come close to God and He
will come close to you. [Recognize that you are] sinners, get your soiled hands clean; [realize that
you have been disloyal] wavering individuals with divided interests, and purify your hearts [of
your spiritual adultery].”
In 1 John 3:1-3 the Apostle John says, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed
upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because
it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall
be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
This is absolute purity.
How does God purify our hearts to be like Him? The Apostle Peter gives us the answer in 1 Peter
1:22 in which he says, “Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the
Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart
fervently.”
The truth according to John 17:17 is God’s Word. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is
truth.”

The word sanctify comes from the Greek word hagiazo which means to make holy, to purify.
This purifying is a process which is done by God’s Word. It is the act of cleansing the evil
that is in our hearts.
We are told by Paul in Ephesians 5:26-27 “That he might sanctify and cleanse it (the church)
with the washing of water by the word. That he might present it to himself a glorious church,
not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
His church is made up of people.
The washing by the Word cleanses us from all that is in our hearts and makes us righteous.
Psalm 119:9 “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto
according to thy word.” Amplified Bible “How shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking
heed and keeping watch [on himself] according to Your word [conforming his life to it].”
In 1 John 1:7 & 9 we are told, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship
one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”…“If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.”
When we study the word purify, sanctify, cleanse and holiness, they are all linked together
and are all achieved through and by the Word.
The things that God says are in our hearts defile us. They make us unclean, impure, unholy. Paul
shows them to be the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21. “Now the works of the flesh are
manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft,
hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness,
revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that
they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
If any man (Christian or non-Christian) does these things, he will not go to Heaven.
1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that
committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.” Amplified Bible “Shun immorality and all
sexual looseness [flee from impurity in thought, word, or deed]. Any other sin which a man
commits is one outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own
body.”
Galatians 5:16 says, “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the
flesh.”
In 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 it says, “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom
of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor
abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed,
but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our
God.” Amplified Bible “Do you not know that the unrighteous and the wrongdoers will not inherit or
have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived (misled): neither the impure and
immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor those who participate in homosexuality, Nor cheats
(swindlers and thieves), nor greedy graspers, nor drunkards, nor foulmouthed revilers and
slanderers, nor extortioners and robbers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God. And
such some of you were [once]. But you were washed clean (purified by a complete atonement for
sin and made free from the guilt of sin), and you were consecrated (set apart, hallowed), and you
were justified [pronounced righteous, by trusting] in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the
[Holy] Spirit of our God.”

In 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 it says, “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for
what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light
with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with
an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the
living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith
the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto
you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”
The promises are “I will dwell in them”, “I will be their God”, “I will receive you” and “I will be a
Father unto you”.
The Amplified Bible says, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers [do not make
mismated alliances with them or come under a different yoke with them, inconsistent with
your faith]. For what partnership have right living and right standing with God with iniquity
and lawlessness? Or how can light have fellowship with darkness? What harmony can there be
between Christ and Belial [the devil]? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?
What agreement [can there be between] a temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of
the living God; even as God said, I will dwell in and with and among them and will walk in and
with and among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. So, come out from
among [unbelievers], and separate (sever) yourselves from them, says the Lord, and touch not
[any] unclean thing; then I will receive you kindly and treat you with favor, And I will be a Father
to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”
1 Corinthians 3:16 “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God
dwelleth in you?”
1 Corinthians 3:17 “If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple
of God is holy, which temple ye are.”
2 Corinthians 7:1 says, “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse
ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
Amplified Bible “Therefore, since these [great] promises are ours, beloved, let us cleanse
ourselves from everything that contaminates and defiles body and spirit, and bring [our]
consecration to completeness in the [reverential] fear of God.”
Finally we are told in 1 Timothy 4:4-5 “For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be
refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.”
How much more should we be obedient to the word we hear and walk in absolute purity?
