First Grade Reading
Lesson 20
This week’s practice:
 Phonics: compound words
 Phonics: short /e/ spelled ea as in bread
 High frequency words: door, old, want, more, try, wash, mother, use
 Grammar: Prepositions and prepositional phrases
This week’s spelling Pattern:
On the spelling test your child will be asked to write the sound(s) we are studying, plus 2 dictation sentences that
contain words spelled this way and sight words we have been studying.
Rather than memorizing a specific list of words, focus on learning the spelling rule so that your child can spell any
Help your child become a problem solver when it comes to spelling by asking questions such as, “If you can spell
hand, how do you spell sand? That’s right, you just change the first letter because they rhyme!”
These types of words will be on the test (not necessarily these words):
bedtime
backpack
sunset
playpen
raincoat
sailboat
inside
flagpole
bedside
weekday
pancake
sunrise
bathtub
himself
windmill
Challenge Option:
Your child will be given the opportunity to write 4 words and 3 more dictation sentences that contain more
challenging words that follow the spelling pattern and harder “High-Frequency” words. This is optional for those
students who are interested in a challenge. Do not worry about studying these words unless the words above are
easy and automatic for your child.
Any of the following words may be on the challenge portion of the test:
basketball
crosswalk
headache
earthquake
drawbridge
sweetheart
breakfast
washtub
Ultra Challenge Bonus Words!
weatherman

Words, Words, Words
 Using index cards or paper cut in 2”x3” pieces, have your child write the words in bold
above or use the flashcards on the webpage and read each word. Have your child add
their word cards to their word box.
 Help your child arrange the cards so that the words are in alphabetical order. Then say
the alphabet together, and point to each card in turn as you name its first letter.
 Ask your child to make up sentences using the words on the cards.
Decodable Story
Lesson 20
Bedtime for Ray
by Tami Lo Verso
It was bedtime. Ray didn’t want to go to bed yet. He
wanted to play his game. He wanted to win.
Ray is six. He can tell time. Ray’s dad has a rule
about bedtime. On a weekday, Ray’s bedtime is at 8:00.
It was that time.
So Ray went up the steps. Shep went with him. Shep
likes to be with Ray, and Ray likes to be with Shep.
Shep likes to watch Ray. Shep gets in the bathtub to
see Ray brush his teeth. Ray can’t let Shep do that.
Shep can’t be in the tub!
Ray must try to get Shep out. So Ray gets in the
bathtub. Ray can’t lift Shep up, but he gets Shep out.
Shep grins as if it is a game.
At last, Ray gets in his bed. His mother reads him a
nice bedtime tale. Shep is so big that he can’t sleep on
Ray’s bed.
Shep can’t get on Ray’s bed, but Shep has a rug.
Shep sleeps on the rug at Ray’s bedside.
Ray’s dream is about his game. In his dream, Ray wins
the game. What do you think Shep’s dream is?
Decodable Story 2
Lesson 20
Rosebud
by Mary Martinez
My mother had a big white boat. Mom’s big white boat was
an old sailboat. Mom let me name it.
I chose “Rosebud.” Mom got red paint and paintbrushes.
We painted that name on the boat. I painted a red rosebud.
Mom and I went sailing. We sailed in the daytime. On nice
days, we set sail at sunrise. Sometimes we sailed all day long.
If it rained, we stayed inside the boat. We played games.
We read. But sailing was more fun than being inside.
When the sun peeked out, we’d go up and sit topside. The
sailboat rocked and we sang songs. We sang, “Row, row, row
your boat.”
One time we went on a long trip. We sailed and sailed. It
was sunset, but it was not bedtime yet.
The sun’s rays spread. The sea glowed yellow and red.
Then no more rays. The sun had set.
It was time to head to bed. It was bedtime on Rosebud.

High-Frequency/ Sight Words
High-frequency words, or sight words, are words that students need to recognize automatically. They are
the most frequently used words in our language and/or do not fit standard spelling rules. Students need to be
able to say each word on this list within 3 seconds, without trying to sound it out. The test is given on the last day
of the week.
Test for “Little Rabbit’s Tale”

wash
old
door
want
use
try
more
Sight words for next week’s

In addition to playing memorization games, use the suggestions below to study the meaning and
usage of any of the new words your child doesn’t already know:
 Cut out the words above or, for more practice, have your child write them on index cards.
 Ask your child to find the two words that begin with n. Which one would come first in
alphabetical order? (night) Do the same thing with the two words that begin with w.
 Ask your child to make up sentences using the words on the cards.
While you study next week’s new words, please continue to study any words from this week that are
not yet memorized.
