[*The numbers in bold refer to the paragraph number in the Catechism, not the page number.] The Liturgical Year The word ‘Liturgy’ refers to the official public worship of the Church. The liturgical year enables us to focus on the principle mysteries of Christ and of His Blessed Mother Mary. The Church’s liturgical year begins on the 1 st Sunday in Advent (preparing for the coming of Christ) and closes on the 34th Sunday with the solemnity of Christ the King. During the year we celebrate five seasons: Advent Christmas Lent Easter Ordinary The whole of the year tends towards the great Solemnity of Easter – the resurrection of the Lord from the dead. SACRED SCRIPTURE – THE BIBLE The Bible (meaning: ‘The Books’) is divided into two parts or Testaments: The Old Testament and The New Testament. The Old Testament prepares the way for Jesus and consists of 46 Books; The New Testament focuses on the life of Jesus and the early Church and consists of 27 Books. There are many translations of the Bible. The Old Testament was predominantly written in Hebrew; The New Testament was written in Greek. Owing to the complexities of these ancient languages, the translation of specific words or phrases often allows for slight variations. When translating the Bible into the vernacular, the translators try to hold in balance fidelity to the original text whilst making the text accessible to the intended readership. In choosing a Bible it is important to make sure that it is a Catholic Bible - Protestant Bibles, such as the King James, as well as omitting seven of the books may not always be accurate translations of the original texts. THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH The Catechism is divided into four parts: The Profession of Faith; The Celebration of the Christian Mystery; Life in Christ; Christian Prayer. The Catechism is a compendium of the official teachings of the Church. By offering a systematic presentation of the faith it enables us to reflect and meditate on the deposit of faith - that which Jesus and the Apostles passed onto their successors, the Pope and the bishops, and they in turn pass onto us. The four parts of the catechism are neatly divided into chapters, articles and subsections. Every paragraph is numbered chronologically. The four parts are not separately numbered in order to remind us that the parts are intricately connected. Next to each paragraph number are other numbers which refer to other paragraphs dealing with similar subject matter; this enables you to cross reference the material.
