Each year, Creative Connections selects a student’s artwork from participating schools to be exhibited at the International Children’s Art Exhibit at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut. This year, from the Ruby Team, Creative Connections has selected Peyton Joiner's artwork, titled “Agriculture”. Peyton's artwork will be displayed to the public from May to August. The TV Club has many changes taking place behind the scenes of the morning announcements to improve both quality and content. Sixth grade members are working on spotlighting classmates with hidden talent. Seventh and eighth grade members are working on using advanced software skills to improve story telling. Students in grade seven are being introduced to a persuasive writing strategy. Students in grade eight are being introduced to strategies for reading social studies materials. The 6th grade band and chorus students had a wonderful field trip to the Hartford Symphony on January 18th. They listened to a pre-concert lecture and watched the symphony members perform Beethoven's 7th Symphony, complete with a question and answer session at its conclusion. They then enjoyed a delicious lunch at Rainforest Cafe. It was a memorable day for all. NBIS Drama Club is in the final stage of preparations for the upcoming show, Harriet the Spy. With a cast of 37 actors, 34 tech crew, and a pit band of 24 musicians, the show involves many NBIS students of all grades. The show is scheduled for two shows, Friday, February 10th and Saturday, February 11th at 7:00 p.m. in North Branford Auditorium. Tickets cost $5.00 each and can be bought at the door or in advance in the NBIS Main Office during school hours. The students have been working very hard, and the show is sure to delight! The NBIS Student Council continues to raise funds through various spirit days to build their North Branford Families in Need Fund. The Student Council collected and donated over 150 toys to the Yale New Haven Hospital Toy Closet during this holiday season. In her thank you letter, Chris Dowling, Toy Closet Program Director asked, “Please extend our appreciation to all the students who helped collect your donation. Your help will support many children at the hospital!” The school store is holding a semiannual clearance sale in order to make room for new school supply items. NBIS tee-shirts and sweatshirts are still available for purchase for $10 and $27, respectively. 7th grade Science classes recently completed their study of Plate Tectonics. As part of their study, student groups created and presented models of the Earth. On February 17, the Ruby Team will be visiting the CT Science Center in Hartford. This summer, an exciting and educational trip to Yellowstone National Park is being planned for interested students and their parents. The 5-day trip will observe active volcano zones and mountain building forces, along with exploring topics in anthropology and ecology. Mr. Nathan Bowers, grade 7 Science teacher, is coordinating the trip. 8th grade Science just recently completed a cross-team research project on our solar system. Each group researched different aspects of a planet and presented it to the class. The Science classes will begin the 8th grade Science CMT embedded task, "Shipping and Sliding". The 4th annual NBIS Scripps Spelling Bee will be held in the Library on Wednesday, February 15th. The Library and Media Lab will be fully functioning for student use throughout the Bee.
