At the same time, we need to create new opportunities for wildlife wherever we can. M on m Co m ad den ncil Cou ca y rr rd Ba er b t i ee Cred A better understanding of where species and habitats are located in the county is therefore essential. NBIS provides this through access to authenticated wildlife records for the whole county. Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth. It is an indicator of the wider quality of our pin loc es . Public bodies must (under the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006) have regard for biodiversity in everything they do, raising its profile and ensuring it forms an integral part of policy and decision-making. Regional and local development documents must ensure the protection of biodiversity and geological diversity through the planning system. For more information go to: www.communities.gov.uk/ planningandbuilding/planning/ planningpolicyguidance/ historicenvironment/pps9/ Norfolk Biodiversity Information Service (NBIS) provides biodiversity information for a range of people and organisations, such as local authorities, developers, ecological consultants, planners, government agencies, conservation bodies and the general public. Anyone who needs information on species and habitats found in a particular area - a biodiversity report for a planning application for example - can use NBIS. The Norfolk Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) ry ca rd er Ma on Comm dde n NBIS is crucial to the development of the county's plan to enhance biodiversity through the work of the Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership. This enables us to undertake a wide range of mapping tasks and geographic visualisation. m Co In the Greater Norwich Growth Point area, NBIS is undertaking a habitat mapping exercise which will identify potential new wildlife sites and help create ecological networks and green corridors linking Norwich to the Broads. m ll e m e C re s s w e G ra s it en re d tt C Ca rpe nter me ae Gr it a ble Field M Cr in a rg ed iff cl Ar d rd Howa Some facts about NBIS Getting involved with NBIS n tra lan it A ed Cr e rs h rt C ressw e l l g Launched in 2008, NBIS builds on the work of the Norfolk Biological Records Centre, holding over one million records of habitats and species. Our analysis of data can, for example, identify the potential for habitat creation, or for linking habitats to benefit wildlife. C re di t Sout d bir Seven spot lady What does NBIS do?
