The natural world is under

In Norfolk, development
pressure means that the need
for sound decision-making to
conserve our precious
biodiversity has never been
greater. At the same time, we
need to create new
opportunities for wildlife
wherever we can.

A better understanding of
where species and habitats
are located in the county is
therefore essential. NBIS
provides this through access to
authenticated wildlife records
for the whole county.

environment and contributes
to our health and well-being.
We all have a responsibility to
conserve biodiversity. Public
bodies must (under the Natural
Environment and Rural
Communities Act 2006) have
regard for biodiversity in
everything they do, raising its
profile and ensuring it forms
an integral part of policy and
decision-making.
Regional and local
development documents
must ensure the protection
of biodiversity and geological
diversity through the
planning system.

Norfolk Biodiversity Information Service (NBIS) provides biodiversity information
for a range of people and organisations, such as local authorities, developers,
ecological consultants, planners, government agencies, conservation bodies
and the general public. Anyone who needs information on species and
habitats found in a particular area - a biodiversity report for a planning
application for example - can use NBIS.

NBIS holds data on species and
habitats in database form in addition
to comprehensive Geographical
Information System (GIS) data.
This enables us to undertake
a wide range of mapping
tasks and geographic
visualisation.

In the Greater Norwich Growth Point area, NBIS is
undertaking a habitat mapping exercise which will
identify potential new wildlife sites and help
create ecological networks and green corridors
linking Norwich to the Broads.

Launched in 2008, NBIS builds
on the work of the Norfolk Biological
Records Centre, holding over one million
records of habitats and species. NBIS is a
not-for-profit partnership. There is no
charge for the information that was given
freely, but a small charge is made for
commercial enquiries to cover the
costs of data extraction and
interpretation.

What
information
does NBIS hold?
he
Our enquiry service can
produce a full biodiversity report
on the wild plants and animals in a
particular area. Our analysis of data
can, for example, identify the
potential for habitat creation,
or for linking habitats to
benefit wildlife.

What
does NBIS do?
NBIS works closely with the County Recorders
who gather information on wildlife in Norfolk,
sharing their records.

Can you help?
NBIS is always interested in receiving additional
records, particularly recent sightings. Even records of
species that are common and widespread are of use as
these could become the rarities of the future.
Natural Connections, managed by Norfolk Wildlife
Trust, also gives you the chance to input to local
wildlife surveys - find out more at
