“Wordo” Glossary: Measurement & Geometry
A
Acute Angle – An angle measuring less than 90°.
Area – The space covered by a two-dimensional shape.
Alternate Angles – A pair of equal angles formed between two
parallel lines and on opposite sides of a transversal.
C
Capacity – The amount a container can hold.
Circumference – The distance around a circle.
Coordinates – The numbers in an ordered pair that locate a
point on a grid. The first number represents the horizontal
point (x-axis) and the second represents the vertical point (yaxis).
Complementary Angles – Two angles whose sum is 90°.
Coordinate Grid – A vertical number line and a horizontal
number line that intersect at right angles at (0,0). Also known
as the Cartesian Plane.
Corresponding Angles – A pair of equal angles on the same
side of a transversal crossing two parallel lines.
D
Diameter – The distance across a circle, measured through its
centre.
F
Formula – A rule that is expressed as an equation.
H
Hypotenuse – The side opposite the right angle in a right
triangle. Also the longest side.
I
Interior Angles – A pair of supplementary angles formed
between two parallel lines and on the same side of a
transversal.
L
Legs – The sides of a right triangle that form the right triangle.
The shorter two sides.
O
Obtuse Angle – An angle greater than 90° and less than 180°.
Opposite Angles – Equal angles that are formed by two
intersecting lines.
Dimensions – Measurements, such as length, width, and
height.
P
Parallel Lines – Lines on the same flat surface that do not
intersect.
Perimeter – The distance around a closed figure.
Pi – The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.
Pythagorean Theorem – In any right triangle, the area of the
square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the areas of the
squares on the legs.
Perpendicular Lines – Lines that intersect at right angles.
R
Radius – The distance from the centre of a circle to any point
on the circle.
Reflection – A transformation that is illustrated by a figure and
its image in a mirror line.
Right Angle – An angle that measures 90°.
Rotation – A transformation in which a figure is turned about a
fixed point.
Reflex Angle – An angle between 180° and 360°.
S
Straight Angle – An angle that measures 180°.
Surface Area – The total area of the surface of an object.
Supplementary Angles – Two angles whose sum is 180°.
T
Translation – A transformation that moves a point or a figure
in a straight line to another position on the same flat surface.
Transversal – A line crossing two or more lines.
V
Variable – A letter or symbol representing a quantity that can
vary.
Volume – The amount of space occupied by an object.
Measured in cubic units.
