NOTE TAKING 101!
One of the most important tools you will need, in order to be successful in math, is to develop strong
and useful note taking skills. Strong, clear and organized notes are critical for you, when reviewing,
completing homework, and preparing for exams.
Leave plenty of space between key points and examples. Crowded notes are difficult to review.
It is always good to have two examples: one very easy to understand when home alone with your
notes and one more complex for you to apply to harder applications of same concept.
Easy to review note taking on finding the LCM of two or more numbers.

LCM & GCF
Finding the Least Common Multiple
Concept: To find the least common multiple among two or more
numbers. Multiples of 3 are 3,6,9,12,15, 18, 21, 24, 27, etc.
Multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 etc. A number that is a
multiple of two or more numbers is a common multiple. A common
multiple of 3 and 4 is 24.
Rules for finding LCM
Step One: Prime Factor all numbers
Step Two: Write numbers in exponential form
Step Three: Bring down all bases
Step Four: Bring down largest Exponents
Step Five: multiply
Examples:
A: Using 18 and 24
Step One
18 = 2x3x3
24 = 2x2x2x3
Step Two
18 = 2 x32
24 = 23 x3
---------------
B: Using 54 and 120
54 = 2x3x3x3
120 = 2x2x2x3x5
54 = 2 x33
120 = 23 x3 x5
-------------------
Steps Three & Four
LCM = 23 x32
Step Five
8x9 = 72
The LCM of 18 and 24 is 72!
LCM = 23 x33 x5
8x27x5 = 1070
The LCM of 54 and 120 is 1070!
Another method of note taking is by using “Tool Kits” AFTER class (or during review periods),
when reviewing notes. On a tool kit you put critical concepts, their rules and an example for a
more speedy review. A tool kit summarizes the “key” concepts from a chapter in order to
review in an organized method.

Tool kits, note cards or flash cards ALL are useful tools for studying and for retaining
the information to a greater depth. Just the act of re-writing assists in understanding
and retention. Again, leave space, don’t cram your notes!
