Heredity Project: DUE DATE Thursday 11/10
Given this list of genetic disorders, each group will research the disorder assigned and create a powerpoint to illustrate the required
points to the class. The information that should be included is:
1. The cause of the disorder: Give the exact genetic problem including whether it a chromosomal problem occurring due to meiosis
going incorrectly, dominant or recessive, and the number of chromosome where the defect is found
2. The symptoms of the disorder. Try to include a picture.
3. The treatment of the disorder. Include prospects for the patient.
4. What group of people is most likely to have the disorder (if one group is more likely to have it)
5. 2 slides giving considerations for and against testing and artificial insemination particular to your disorder. Do not include your
personal philosophy on these issues. Only include things someone would have to consider as they relate to your disorder irrelevant of
how they feel about genetic testing and artificial insemination.
Think about these questions for #5
A. Would we want to know if we had this disorder before symptoms were detected?
B. Would we want to test our children for this disorder if we thought they had a 25% chance of having the disorder? If so,
would you tell them about it?
C. Do you think that you would favor genetic testing and artificial insemination if you reduce the chance of having a child with
this disorder from 25% to 0%?
RULES for the PPT; NO MORE THAN 15 words per slide. You can say more than what is given. NO READING THE PPT.
GRADE (2 homework / quiz grades) Failure to follow the directions or the two rules will mean no better than a C on the project. IDEAS:
you tube video? Pictures of patients, pictures of chromosomes, pictures explaining the problem at the biochemical level.
