CHAPTER 1 PLATE TECTONICS AND LANDFORMS
1.3 JAPAN AND SOUTH-EAST ASIA
Name:
ACTIVITIES
Think
1.
Describe the direction in which the plates in South-East Asia are moving. What effect
does this have on tectonic activity?
2.
Study the map of the Mariana Trench.
(a) How many islands are shown?
(b)
Name the largest island.
(c)
Draw a sketch to show the change in slope of the trench from Guam towards the
east. (Hint: Use the vertical and horizontal scales.)
3.
Describe the location of Indonesia and the Philippines in relation to plate boundaries.
Now describe the spatial association between the location of these boundaries and the
distribution of volcanoes. Is this a strong relationship? Explain.
4.
Study the photograph below. Why do you think people in Java live close to active
volcanoes such as Merapi? Why are these people at risk?
Design and create
5.
Use sketch diagrams to describe and explain the two main landform features formed
when two oceanic plates collide.
Dig deeper
6.
Research Challenger Deep, including information about animals that are able to live in
these very deep waters. Present your research as a story about being the first human to be
able to travel to the bottom of the trench. What is it like? What do you see?
