Essay: (30 Pts) Answer the following question with as much detail as possible
The Story:
20) You are going down the road – headed to where the climate suits your clothes –
when all of a sudden you inhale a miniature alien spaceship. This spaceship,
which is captained by Winston, lodges in you lungs. Winston is very interested in
studying the human lung, so she decides to test the levels of oxygen. Just as she
gets her probe out into the blood in the lungs, her ship (with her in it) gets swept
away. Luckily, Winston gets a good oxygen measurement in the lungs, but she is
not able to get another reading until she gets to tissue in the body.
The Questions
a. On the Hb oxygen dissociation curve drawn below…..
 Label the axis – be sure to include units.
 Indicate what partial pressure of oxygen Winston would be
expected to find in the lungs and in the tissue.
 Also indicate what partial pressure you would find in tissue that
is exercising.
 What is the shape of the curve called?
 Why is the steep portion of the curve so important?
b. Winston is not the best navigator, so help her get back out of the body.
 Draw a heart and label each chamber and valve
 Show the path of blood beginning, and ending in the lungs
 Indicate (with hatch marks) where the blood is highly
oxygenated
