Blood
 Blood is made up of 2
sections.
 A solid section and a
liquid section.
Blood – Solid section
 Solid section makes up
45% of all blood volume.
Consists of:
 Red Blood cells
 White Blood cells
 Platelets
Blood - Liquid section
 55% of blood volume is
liquid.
 The liquid is called
plasma.
Components of blood – Red blood
cells
 Contains iron.
 Give the red colour to
blood.
 Are produced in the bone
marrow (pelvis, sternum,
skull)
 Have a life cycle of 120
days.
Components of blood – white blood
cells
 Produced in the bone
marrow.
 Move to areas of
infection or disease and
attempt to wipe out
invading infections.
 Puss is the accumulation
of dead white blood cells.
Components of blood - Plasma
 Plasma is a yellow
solution containing:
 Water, nutrients,
hormones, and waste
products.
Functions of blood
 There are 2 main
functions of blood.
1. Transport
2. Body normality
Function - transport
 The blood transports
nutrients from the
digestive system and
lungs to the tissues.
 Also transports waste
products to the lungs and
urinary systems.
Function – body normality
 Blood serves 2 main
purposes for body
normality.
1. Body Temperature
2. Protection (clotting,
foreign bodies)
