The Circulatory System Year 10 AADP Things we are going to cover Blood Blood Vessels (Vascular System) The Pulmonary (Lungs) System The Systemic (heart) Circuit The Heart Blood Blood is made up of 2 sections. A solid section and a liquid section. Blood – Solid section Solid section makes up 45% of all blood volume. Consists of: Red Blood cells White Blood cells Platelets Blood - Liquid section 55% of blood volume is liquid. The liquid is called plasma. Components of blood – Red blood cells Contains iron. Give the red colour to blood. Are produced in the bone marrow (pelvis, sternum, skull) Have a life cycle of 120 days. Components of blood – white blood cells Produced in the bone marrow. Move to areas of infection or disease and attempt to wipe out invading infections. Puss is the accumulation of dead white blood cells. Components of blood - Plasma Plasma is a yellow solution containing: Water, nutrients, hormones, and waste products. Functions of blood There are 2 main functions of blood. 1. Transport 2.
