Percent is ____________________________________________________________________________.
That means 50% is 50 per (or out of) 100
2% is 2 per 100
100% is 100 per 100 ( or one whole or 1)
312% is 312 per 100 (Percents can be more than 100. This means that they are more
than one whole)
Since each percent means per 100 it can be written as a fraction
Name :___________________________ Date:________________________ Period:_________________
Ex. 17%= 17/ 100
20%= 20/100= (Can this be simplified, yes) 1/5
200%= 200/100 (why is the denominator 100? Because percents have 100 as the denominator.
This does not change because a larger number is in the numerator)
Change the percent to fraction
You try
315%=
25%=
How do I change a percent to a decimal? First way is to move the decimal two places to the left?
Why do you move the decimal two times to the left? If you look at place value, two place behind
the decimal is considered the hundredths place. Remember that percents are part of a whole (or
part per 100).
Change percent to decimal
Example
15%=
125%=
25.34%=
How to change fractions to percents?
Use proportions. Proportion is two equivalent fractions
Example
What percent is equivalent to the fraction ¾ ?
¾ =x/100
What percent is equivalent to the fraction 5/12?
Work it out
- 5.12%
(Stand up) Why?
- 4.6%
(Clap Once) why?
- 41.6 Repeating% (Stomp Once) Why?
Last Problem: A paint store gives a discount to 12 of every 100 customers. What
percent of the customers did not receive a discount? _______________________
