GENETICS PROJECTS
Name: ______________________________ Hr: ______ Unit 6
C level: Everyone MUST do a genetic disorder research project (140 points). Due 3/18.
To earn a B:
Do C level plus any THREE of these online B-level activity options (10 pts each) and answer
related questions: (Some of these have printed alternatives if online access is a problem. See front desk or ask Mrs. A)
B level Option #1; Dragon Genetics: http://www2.edc.org/weblabs/Dragon/dragons.html
Note: The final activity has no end. Try to hatch and match a few baby dragons, but don’t waste all hour on it!
1. According to this dragon activity, which 2 traits follow a simple dominant inheritance pattern?
a.
Horns
b. Legs
c. Wings
d. Color
e. Fire
2. Which trait shows incomplete dominance with only 2 alleles, resulting in 3 possible phenotypes?
a.
Horns
b. Legs
c. Wings
d. Color
e. Fire
3. Which trait shows incomplete dominance with multiple alleles, giving 7 possible phenotypes?
a.
Horns
b. Legs
c. Wings
4. Which trait is sex-linked recessive?
a.
Horns
b. Legs
d. Color
e. Fire
(note, the intro claims that dragons are XY for females and XX for males, as birds actually are).
c. Wings
d. Color
e. Fire
5. If a dragon’s genes were hh, LL, Cc, BC, and ff, what 5 traits would it show?
B Level Option #2: Punnett Squares; http://www2.edc.org/weblabs/Punnett/punnettsquares.html
1) In the 1st Punnett Square, how often will the chicks probably be brown?________
Alternative
Opion #2
Worksheet
is available
(Can’t do both)
2) In the 2nd Punnett Square, how many are carriers for albinism? __________
3) In the 3rd Punnett Square, what % are albinos? ______________
4) What is the genotype of a long-tailed albino lemming (hint: 4 letters!)? ______________
B Level Option #3: Genetic Counselling/ Pedigrees (DO only FOUR of these questions);
http://www2.edc.org/weblabs/GeneticCounseling/gen_counsel.html
Answer 4 of the following questions (you may SKIP the other 3 in this option)
1) Justine & Fred’s kids have a ______% chance of being hemophiliac if they are girls
Alternative
Opion #3
Worksheet
is available
(Can’t do both)
and a ______% chance of being hemophiliac if they are boys.
2) Curly ears in cats are:
a) dominant
b) recessive
c) sex-linked
3) Chances of John & Veronica’s kids having Sickle Cell anemia? _________
4) Chances of Ace having albino puppies if mated with an albino female? ________
5) Chance of Carl & Casey having colorblindness = __________%
6) Chances Walter’s offspring would have white fur if mated with white female? _______%
and with heterozygous female? _______%
7) Huntington’s disease is: a) dominant
b) recessive
c) sex-linked
B Level Option #4: Karyotypes: http://www.biology.arizona.edu/human_bio/activities/karyotyping/karyotyping2.html
Alternative
Opion #4
Worksheet
is available
(Can’t do both)
1) What is Patient A’s notation? ____________ Patient A’s diagnosis? ___________________________
2) What is Patient B’s notation? ____________ Patient B’s diagnosis? ___________________________
3) What is Patient C’s notation? ____________ Patient C’s diagnosis? ___________________________
A & B level projects are due 3/29 (C level papers & presentations are due 3/18)
To earn an A for your Genetics Unit Projects grade, do the C level research presentation & 3 B level
plus ONE of the A level options. (30pts).
A level Option #1: Make a PEDIGREE based on the heredity of one particular observable trait in your own family.
You can neatly draw it, you can cut and paste materials, you can do it on the computer…
any method is fine, as long as it is clear & follows examples given previously in class.
Common traits: Left-handed, freckles, Sickle-Cell Anemia, widow’s peak, twins, rolling tongue,
curved thumb, 6 fingers/toes, red hair… ask if you have another in mind.
Include:
o
o
o
o
a KEY (squares = males, circles = females, color in affected peoples’ shapes)
At least 3 generations if possible (like you & siblings, parents & aunts/uncles, grandparents)
12-20 people who are blood relatives (genetically related, not step-parents please).
Genotypes (like AA, Aa, or aa) for as many individuals as possible (Give letter key too)
*Note: If you cannot contact 12 family members, or are adopted, etc., I can give you a family
history reading. You can use the information found in the reading to draw a pedigree.
A -level option # 2: A Genetic Disorder POSTER Make a detailed poster including:






Name of disorder ( it CAN be the same disorder you did for your C-Level presentation)
A respectful image of a person showing symptoms.
A karyotype, with affected chromosome pair circled.
Common symptoms, treatment, life expectancy, frequency (how common is it?)
CHECK your spelling, be neat and creative!
CITE sources on BACK of poster for all images and information used.

A level Option #3: Genetic Disorder Research PAPER. Research any other genetic disorder (you
CAN do this on your C-Level topic), then present the information in a quality written report.
Paper must be: 12 point font, double spaced, 2 pages long.
In full sentences (MelCON paragraphs) with proper grammar and spelling.
Information to include:




C Level
*make sure this is in your own words, said in a way that classmates could understand.
Name of disorder, the location of the affected gene or chromosome, & the inheritance pattern.
Description of the risk factors (if any) & frequency, typical symptoms and possible treatments.
How it may affect the individual’s life &/or the family.
Cite at least three sources.
