Title of propsed paper for ASRANet International Colloquium 2002: Stochastic Evaluation Of Open Type Steel Check Dam For Damming Up Performance Authors Satoshi KATSUKI 1, Gakuto FUKAWA 2 Abstract The debris flow disasters often occurred and many peoples were killed by the debris flow disaster, because the most part of Japan Islands are covered with mountainous area and the residential area close to the foot of mountain. In order to prevent such debris flow disaster, many check dams, which is constructed in river and prevent the debris from flowing down, have been constructed. On the other hand, the riverbed trends to sink by constructing the check dam, which makes trouble in water supply management in the down stream area. To solve this contradictive problem, the open type check dam structure, which has a certain amount of open space, is constructing in these days. But the performance of the open space on the contradictive problem, letting pass the sediment at ordinary time but no-pass in debris flow, is not certified by any numerical or theoretical approaches. This paper presents both an application of the distinct element method for random simulation of debris flow passing through the open type steel made check dam structure and a stochastic evaluation method for the damming up performance of the structure hit by the debris flow which includes huge rocks or large gravels. The simulation by the distinct element method shows very well the plugging mechanism observed at the open space of the check dam by the rocks or gravels and its randomness induced by the randomness of gravel size and gravel arrangement contained in the debris flow. The proposed stochastic evaluation method can estimate very well the expected value and/or its variation for the simulation results by the distinct element method.
