Goal
The goal of this project is to give you an opportunity to conduct independent research, effectively use resources
and, either working by yourself or in a small group, to show what you have learned about volcanoes.
Timeline
We have a Library Computer Lab reserved thru this week and part of next week. This completed project is due
________________________ at the start of class.
Resources
*There will be a variety of resources available for you to use for research. Be sure if you use any of the
following you return them to the rolling cart from which they came.
These include:
Catastrophic Events Book L20 pp.206-09, 214-16, 220-21, 229-31, & readings in Lessons 21, 22

www.volcanoes.usgs.gov
You may bring in any resource you have at home. Be sure to put your name in it.
*Internet/Computer. You may gather resources from the Internet, if you want. Keep a running list (Easybib)
of any web sites from which you collect images and information Attach this list to your project.
*You may use computer assisted drawing/editing programs, if you wish.
*Do not search the Internet and down load someone else’s ideas for this project and call it your own.
*You may use colored pencils, crayons or pens for this project. Meter sticks, rulers, scissors and glue sticks
will also be available for use.
Project Presentation
Choose from one of the 4 project presentations below:
-PowerPoint / Prezi
-Trifold Brochure
-Poster / 3 Panel Poster
-Research report
If you have some other idea, see me for approval.
Required Information
(BOLD=REQUIRED TERM)
1) Title
This will be the first information seen. Make this attractive, original and colorful to grab attention. You need to
include the title (ex. Viscous Volcanoes!!!), each group mate’s first and last name, and 7th grade Science.
2) Structure of a Composite Volcano
This needs to show the interior of a volcano. Design a cross-section view of a typical composite (stratovolcano)
and label the following parts:

magma chamber

ash cloud

cinders and lava bombs

main vent

tephra

lahar

side vent

lava and magma

caldera

lava dome
3) How is a Composite Volcano Formed?
Here, you are required to explain how a Composite Volcano (strato-volcano) is created. Explain how and
what causes them to erupt. Also, a diagram showing a volcano’s relationship to plate tectonics will be
necessary. In this diagram, include the Subduction of Oceanic Plates in the role of volcano creation and use
arrows to show Convection in the Mantle.
4) Igneous Rock
What do you know about rocks “born from fire?” Do a little bit of digging and research at least 3 different
types of volcanic rock (make sure at least one of the rocks is Basalt), how they are formed and how they might
be identified. Some type of supporting illustration should be included. Also, define the difference between
Extrusive and Intrusive igneous rocks.
5) Cascade Range
Where is the Cascade Range located? Include a map to show its location in regard to the Pacific Ocean. On
this map, label the following volcanoes: Mt. Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Mt.
Adams and Mt. Hood. Explain how the Cascade Range was formed. How do these mountains affect the
climate of the Pacific Northwest? Find out why Mt. Rainier is considered to be one of the most dangerous
mountains in the United States.
6) Choose a Volcano
Select a volcano from somewhere on Earth that interests you! Determine if it is a Composite, Shield or
Cinder Cone volcano. You should include how the tectonic setting (i.e. divergent boundary, hot spot,
subduction zone, etc.) creates your volcano. Also, include historical eruptions, impacts on people, and recent
activity.
