Matter Poetry
7th Grade
You will be writing some poetry in science class. Using your notes, worksheets, and what
you have learned in class, you will will write a poem about any topic of matter.
You may write a modern cinquain, or a diamonte.
CINQUAIN: There are rigid rules for writing a cinquain.
Follow the structure:
line 1 - one noun: a title or name of the matter (this is the title as well as line 1)
line 2 - two adjectives describing the matter
line 3 - three action “-ing” verbs describing the matter’s job or function
line 4 - four words describing a feeling about the matter; a complete sentence
line 5 - one word that is a synonym (same or similar meaning) for line 1

Grammar Review:

A diamante is a poem in the shape of a diamond. There is a “synonym diamante”
which fully describes a topic of matter, and an “antonym diamonte” which describes
matter that changes, or two topics of matter which are very different or opposites.
For a synonym diamante, follow the structure:
