CTE Lesson Plan Author/Email: Robert Douglas [email protected] Pathway: Cluster: Science, Engineering and Technology Manufacturing, Industrial Production and Construction Date Submitted: 08/22/2011 Grade Level: (check all that apply) Course: 6 Principles of Manufacturing 9 7 10 8 11 12 Project Name: Manufacturing a Bird House Objective(s): Students will identify the meaning and purpose of the manufacturing process. Students will have an understanding of how the manufacturing process works. Primary Unit of Study (from Scope & Sequence): Design and Manufacturing Individual Project College & Career Readiness Standards: Software: None Materials Required: Hammer, wood glue, sandpaper, nails, drill, ½” plywood, ¼” plywood, 25 dowel rods, paint Prerequisite Skills: Safety rules: Students must master the safety test giving at the beginning of the year, how to use band saw and other tools, sketching, difference between invent and innovate Time Required: 1-2 weeks (45 min each class) Essential Questions: Do you know how the manufacturing process works? What is the process before the final product is made? What occurs after something has been invented? Key Vocabulary: Manufacturing process, Engineering, Production, Quality control, Distribution, Assembly Line. Procedure/Instruction: Students will be introduced to the manufacturing process by going to the following website: http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/technology/interactive/index.html and completing the “Test Your Knowledge” activity. After they have completed the activity the students will then go to http://manufacturing.stanford.edu/ and watch the presentation over how everyday things are made. Students will sketch their ideal birdhouse before moving on to the next step. Students will then use the manufacturing process to create their own bird house and give a brief description on how each step was used during the process of creating their own bird house. The students will build their bird house and conclude their description of each step in the manufacturing process. Bird house plans can be found at http://www.50birds.com/mpsidemount.htm . Closure: What is the purpose of the manufacturing process? How does the manufacturing process affect you? Evaluation/Assessment: Test Your Knowledge Activity over how the manufacturing process works after visiting the websites and before the actual building begins (students must master the quiz before moving on to the building section of the project). Review of student sketches to ensure proper sketching techniques are being used providing feedback and revision as necessary. Evaluate the final product (bird house) and the descriptions of how each step were used during the process of creating their bird house (worksheet).
