Horj High School II
Chemistry Test
Name:
Class: Grade 12 LS
Date: 4-4-07
Time: 90min
I. Write a series of reactions to transform : (2pts)
A. ethylene (ethene) to diethyl ether.
B. alcohol
carboxylic acid
propyl-2-methylpropanoate
II. The mass composition of an organic compound (A) of general formula CxHyOz is:
C : 64.68% ; H : 13.51%
A. Calculate the molar mass of (A), knowing that the gas obtained by the vaporization
of 0.74g of this compound occupy, at T = 400oK and P = 1 atm, a volume of
328mL.
Given: R = 0.082L.atm.mol-1K-1.
B. Show that the molecular formula of (A) is C4H10O.
The molar masses of H, C and O in g/mol are 1, 12 and 16 respectively.
C. Write the condensed structural formula and the name of all the isomers of (A),
knowing that it is a saturated mono alcohol.
D. To what class of alcohols does each isomer of (A) belong?
E. Choose from the isomers of (A) two chain isomers and two positional isomers.
F. 1. The dehydration of the alcohol (A) in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid
leads to the formation of two alkene isomers. What is the compound (A)? Write
the condensed structural formulas of the 2 alkene isomers.
2. The alcohol (A) is a liquid of boiling point t = 100oC, while the ether
containing the same number of carbon has a lower boiling point. Explain by a
drawing.
G. The oxidation of compound (A) by an acidified potassium dichromate K2Cr2O7
solution gives another compound (B).
1. To what family of organic compounds does (B) belong? Write its
corresponding condensed structural formula and name it.
2. Write the two half equations as well as the overall equation of the oxidation of
alcohol (A). (10 pts.)
